I recently set up my Neoden4 with new cameras and OpenPnP. My machine has rails installed, and I need them to be able to process larger batches.
I’m curious if anyone has ever created a script that pulls a board onto the rails, moves it to a specific position, and detects the edge using the head camera? That should be possible with the given actuators and OpenCV. Has anyone tried this yet?
Any help is welcome!

Best regards from Dresden, Germany

How does the Neoden set the board position using the factory software?

My Kayo machines have a stopper pin that rises when a board is boing loaded, so that the board runs into the pin and stays there until the conveyor stops running. That way boards always right their right edge at the same location (the conveyor runs left-to-right) and I set the board origin on a per-board basis.

Does the Neoden use vision for this?

Yes, the old Neoden firmware used vision for this in a smart way:
1. User can place head cam at position, where board should stop in rails. typical in the middle to have short ways to buttom cam.
2. rails loads board quite fast until the head cam detects a change in view, just like a light barrier
3. then rails adjust the board back and forth much slower, until board edge is centered
4. finding fiducials

Yes. Originally, Neoden4 uses vision for this.

I made this function using an STM32 board, two stepper motor drivers, two buttons, and one end switch, and I didn’t dive into this rabbit hole with OpenPnP.

As you already know, Neoden4 is an overpriced piece of  "equipment", so it needs A LOT of modifications, including modifications to the Neoden4 OpenPnP drivers for production, because it can’t be used for production with OpenPnP out of the box.

I bought mine cheap and fully equipped with a lot of feeders. I think the mechanic part isn‘t so bad. But the original software was hate and not really ready for production too. I had many issues with buttom vision and imprecise placements.
That‘s why I decides to give OpenPnP a chance, knowing that a lot of tweaking is necessary.

So I will try to implement a script today to do this task, since I‘m a software man ;)

I bought mine new, and at full price - $16,000 - it's not even worth half that money

100%

"god bless you" - you will need to do a lot of hardware things
