Greetings!
I am a fellow hobbyist and was wondering if the Hobby BLDC motors have been used to drive the X and Y axis yet by anybody.
I think it is possible because the holding torque requirements are not too much and initiatives such as VESC and O-Drive BLDC motor controllers with FOC and encoder inputs could do the job.
I would love to hear what you think about this.

Well, these days you can get nice servo for 150$ ( I got 2x Leadshine BLDC packs), so the pressure to build own controller is much smaller then e.g. 10 years ago.

Just note that most design with servo also use extra gearing  1:2 ...1:4 (usually belts)

Have you searched for other projects out there so far?

The ODrive has an old demo of being retrofitted into a LitePlacer that's a couple of years old: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R2v-Fcx_GSI
