Max 1Mpx for downlooking is enough if you plan to use it only for fiducials not also for some boards documentation.
Max 1Mpx for bottom camera if you plan only small smd align (let's say up to some 15x15mm). If you plan very small and much bigger parts - better take 2-3Mpx.
Remember that no sense to play with too large resolutions looking on bandwidth limitations. If it finally will be delivered to Openpnp through USB...
No sense to play with to high fps as well, because of limitations and Opnpnp anyway uses "only" max to near 15fps (ignores all above if you deliver it).
Thanks for the feedback! So I take it that downward facing cam is only for fiducials with openpnp? Or are there other uses? If only fiducials, then would an endoscope work since they are cheap? or is raspberry pi cam better?

Thanks for the feedback! What about raspberry pi for downward OR upward facing? Do they work well for either case? I couldn’t find many examples of people using them, but I ask because they are super cheap on aliexpress for about $5

I’m using one for upward facing, it works really well. You just have to adjust the lens to move the focus point close to the camera. I’ve posted the setup details before, have a look in the archives.

The Raspberry Pi cameras use similar camera modules to the ELP cameras, so the quality is similar, but then you need a Raspberry Pi to interface to it, along with some way to get OpenPnP to talk to the Raspberry Pi and get images from it.
Â
I think someone did this at one point, but I can't remember the details. If you search this you may find something.

It's also used for strip feeder vision, drag feeder vision, loose part feeder vision, and general positioning. Endo cameras are universally trash and not recommended. They are cheap, but almost everyone who uses one ends up replacing it.As always, I highly recommend the ELP cameras as shown here: https://github.com/openpnp/openpnp/wiki/FAQ#what-should-i-buildThey are well tested, well supported and there are lots of people using them, so it's easy to get help.Jason
