Hi Everyone.

I am going to make a light for the ELP cameras (same for up and down) and I was wondering if I could leverage anyone's previous experience with lighting.

I am thinking of 8x 1206 package 20mA cool white LEDs. Too much? Not enough? wrong color?

I will be using a MOSFET to switch on and off two LED drivers (with wide input ratings, I will be using 24v input). A current sense resistor attached to the drivers can be used to adjust the LED current after the fact. (I looked into pots and stuff but it is too spendy for high wattage ones).

Happy to hear some input. I hope to submit a design by the end of the week. The board will likely be square, pick up the ELP mounting holes and have a circular hole in the middle.

Thanks,

Peter.

One issue I was having with the ring I attached to the bottom of my camera like Jason was a terrible reflection off the PCB which rendered it useless for me.  I ended up being of the thought that I would mount some adjustable lighting to the 4 corners of the machine instead of attaching something to the camera.

Get daylight (neutral white) and 90+CRI leds for ELP cameras, its what the sensors expect and will give you the best contrast.

I've designed all my camera lights to be angled such that they are away from the camera a bit and point at the part, to try to minimise reflection straight back at the camera. I havent finished my machine, so i'm not sure how well this will work - but its pretty typical photography stuff. My bottom camera has 8 wedges with leds on them, which can be controlled individually if I want, the top camera has lighting on two opposed sides setup like stadium seating, each angled to point at the bed surface directly below the camera.

Excellent feedback you guys.

Now I am thinking maybe I will just design little LED squares with drivers on each square. Then 2x 3 wire headers on each so they can be daisy chained into whatever configuration works best (and angled).

Will look at natural light as you suggest.

An older rev of my light boards are here if you're interested.

Looks good mark, did you ever have any reflection problems, or is this still a proof of concept?

Solidworks in large assembly mode doesnt make things pretty

Here's the head by itself which might be more visible?

I only have an older version of the model here, at home I have the pcbs mounted on it.

Using a diffuser of some sort greatly helps cut down on reflections. I bought a bunch of them from ebay for testing but didn’t find any I like.

Paul.

Hi Mark,

looks great. What do you use the LED strips mounted to the steppers / head assembly for?

Thanks
Malte

They are for potential future use, and also to make seeing what the nozzle is doing easier :)

So, apparently, "model envy" is a real thing and it isn't pretty.

Ok, so I am going with a simple, modular approach. 30cm x 30cm panels that daisy chain together. 1, M4 screw in the center. I will use them on both cameras. starting with just two panels per camera.

This looks like a winner Peter. Can't wait to try it.
