Ok searching around for hollow steppers and found these 2 both for ~$23 including shipping:
Looking around the overseas site I have not found much any cheaper.

Either one will fit in my design due to the size of my ball slides. Plan is to go with a pair of rubber seal ball bearings to make the vac tube swivel.
From what I can see the advantages are Nema 8 weighs less but the Nema 11 has more torque and longer shafts.

Anyone else have any opinions one way or the other or happen to know of a better / cheaper source for hollow shaft steppers?

I'm using robotdigg's NEMA11, as they have a bit more thermal mass, a bit more rotational mass, and have an M5 thread on the back for a push to fit tube connector. The NEMA8's are not quite rated for the current of a decent external motor driver. I have hundreds of watts of stepper motor on my X and Y axis, so weight doesnt really worry me. I'm also guessing the NEMA11 will hold a microstep slightly better due to the larger size...

Thanks for the input. Going to go with the Nema 11s since I have the space and rather not have to worry about thermals.

Why would you need more torque on the hollow shaft stepper motor?
Aren't you only rotating a trivial part and maybe the vacuum hose on the other end?

Typically it should give you better micro stepping
