OE Week 2022: Celebrating a Decade of OER at Tacoma Community College!

Hello, OER community! It's been an exciting OE Week, and I wanted to share some celebratory OER news from Tacoma Community College in Tacoma, Washington. At TCC, we are also celebrating our 10th year of OER advocacy and success this year! TCC students are now saving over $1.5 million in textbook costs per year, and overall, TCC students have saved almost $10 million in textbook costs this past decade.

Below are some resources we have shared to our campus community to celebrate this OER milestone, and we are sharing them out with the wider OER community, as well, in case some of these resources may also help you advocate for OER on your campus.

• For an overview of OER @ TCC and how TCC students began our OER pilot program during the 2011-12 academic year, here is a video message from TCC College President Dr. Ivan Harrell.

• OER began @ TCC thanks to the vision and advocacy of our student leaders, and here is a short video recording that highlights a 2012 panel of TCC students sharing why OER matters to them.
  

• For more info and details about the history of student OER advocacy @ TCC, also check out this “From spark to flame: Lighting the way for sustainable student OER advocacy framework at a community college” article by TCC’s Jennifer Snoek-Brown, Candice Watkins, and Dale Coleman, which was published in College & Research Libraries News, Sept. 2021.
  

• To spotlight the "OER builders" at TCC -- the faculty and support staff who first began, and have continued, creating and adopting OER in their classes -- here is an "OER Builders" video that features interviews, insights, and stories with Quill West, Christie Fierro, Christopher Soran, Candice Watkins, Jennifer Snoek-Brown, and Mary Fox.
  

• We have launched this week our inaugural OER Titan Awards, to recognize and celebrate individuals who are doing and supporting outstanding open education work at TCC. This award is open to TCC students, staff, and faculty, and we will be celebrating the recipients later this spring. This award is sponsored by TCC's Open Education Steering Group, in collaboration with the Office of Student Engagement (OSE) and the Associated Students of TCC (ASTCC). (Also, huge thanks to Amy Hofer @ Open Oregon and Will Engle @ UBC for their helpful advice about their own awesome OER champion awards!)
  

• And last but not least, here is a short video featuring TCC's current student body president, Melissa Littleton, who wraps up OE Week with her personal perspective about OER textbook savings and the collective efforts of our campus community.

Thank you to everyone who has collaborated with Tacoma Community College's OER program and initiatives this past decade. As TCC student body president Melissa Littleton said in her video: "It is so important to understand where we came from, where we are, and where we're going." We look forward to our next decade of OER advocacy!
