The Library and Academic Innovation Department of Western Oregon University is excited to announce the new openly licensed textbook, Teaching Through Rather Than About, Edited by Ken Carano and Amit Kobrowski. Chapter Authors contributions by; Ken Carano, Murray Carlisle, Lisa Colombo, Rebecca Eisenberg, Kristen Grosserhode, Gricelda M. Harshbarger, Amit Kobrowski, Karli Olsen, Tabitha Richards, Nick Tayer, Lynsey Turner and Charles Williams. 


This resource empowers K–12 social studies teachers to teach Black history through Black voices using LaGarrett King's Black Historical Consciousness framework. With inquiry-based lesson plans, primary sources, and student activities, it helps educators challenge biased narratives and foster critical thinking, empathy, and inclusivity in the classroom.



This resource was created by passionate educators using OER to support inclusive practices.
