unable to start openolat server

Hello,

i used the guide https://docs.openolat.org//manual_admin/installation/installGuide/ to setup an openolat server on a virtual server (Ubuntu 20.04 LTS)

This is the first Error from the olat.log:

Hi 

Line 4 and line 12 of your log do not match. In one place the path to your context root says OpenOlat 15.3.5, however the system then loads as OpenOlat 16.2.1. So, which code are your trying to run? BTW: please use Version 16.2.2 and not 16.2.1, the update contains important fixes. 

Later on you also have out-of-memory exceptions, but I think this is due to the previous error. You might want to check this as well.

I used the guide and did not changed the name of the directory. I have changed that and am now using the version 16.2.2. Still no luck.

How much memory did you assign tomcat?

On some systems there are very strange limits on how many files are allowed to be opened by a single process. Maybe your system has such limitations. Check your ulimit. If you have it set to something like 1024 increase it for the tomcat user, this is way too low for an application like  OpenOlat.

Hi Florian, i have tried out the exact values from the doku you linked and also tried to double the values but no luck.

here is the result of ulimit -a. May be you can see something suspicious.

Sorry, just saw that your message is unanswered. Unfortunately I can not help you. I don’t know what your problem is I can just tell you that it must be a problem specific to you setup. We operate many OpenOlat instances without such problems.

If you need commercial help with en-depth analysis of your setup, logfiles etc. you can contact me privately. You might also consider our fully managed hosting solutions where you don’t have to fiddle around with technical stuff at all so you can concentrate on your didactical work.

You might want to check the content of your setenv.sh script again: 

https://docs.openolat.org/manual_admin/installation/installGuide/#setenvsh

Make sure you properly refresh the page to not load a cached one. We modified the setenv.sh a little bit, maybe you system did not load with enough memory after all. 

Change: 

 

CATALINA_OPTS="-Xmx1024m -Xms512m -XX:MaxMetaspaceSize=512m \

to 

CATALINA_OPTS=" \

-Xmx1024m -Xms512m -XX:MaxMetaspaceSize=512m \

it has, what else is running on that server?
