Looks like I need to include my candidate statement, so here it is....

What I can bring to the Communications Lead position….

I have worked as a community journalist over several years with Oakland Local, Oakland Voices and recently KALW.  I attended the first Code for Oakland and I have also written a few pieces about Open Oakland in the past. I am currently in Google's beta test of "Bulletin" - an information sharing platform.

I think we need to better rep Open Oakland as a fun and effective organization -- one that can channel our energy and insights into making Oakland a better place to live.  But there is also a more serious side to reaching out to the larger community.

I think it's critically important to do outreach to all of Oakland.  And I specifically mean reaching out to East and West Oakland groups.  I am a long term resident of Deep East Oakland and I know of its history of neglect and under representation and the unique problems there.

I also know that it is not very effective to just send invitations to community groups - groups that are dealing every day with issues of education, equity, jobs, justice - and expect them to come to our meetings.  We have to go to their events and meetings,  we have to listen, we have to show up, we have to prove that we can be dependable partners. And that usually takes some time and some shoe leather. It's important it show up... a lot.

If we are to be truly inclusive as Open Oakland, we need both increase our digital representation AND also be present and involved with other Oakland community organizations.  I have both the time and inclination to do this necessary outreach.

In the past, I have photo-documented many of Open Oakland's public events, including NDOCH and City Camp.  Here is a list of links for those albums and also some of my portrait work:

And if you believe as I do …. Here's the link for the ballot:
