Hey there!
To help two campaigns Tech for Campaigns has done work with, we are distributing the below longer term volunteer opportunities for Eric Swalwell and Brian Forde - two California progressives who are making a substantial investment in tech adoption to bolster their progressive agendas.
These aren’t Tech for Campaigns administered, time-bounded projects, but rather are opportunities to work directly with these legislators, longer term, that we wanted to share.
You were specifically selected because your Tech for Campaigns profile has skills that match the below needs, and we thought you would like being aware of them. Feel free to forward to others who might be a fit as well.
Specifically, the campaigns are looking for the following volunteer roles:
Swalwell:
Forde:

This is a very unique long-term opportunity (i.e., he's an incumbent so this is not for a particular campaign/election cycle--we get to build real infrastructure--we're looking for a commitment of at least 1 year) to support a member of the House Intelligence and Judiciary Committee.
We are building social interaction and analytics tools, data insights and reporting, unified data platforms, and true issue-based marketing campaigns.
You may have seen recently that he took down Tucker Carlson on Fox News: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Giukv73vL4E (and he's endorsing Brian Forde, the candidate below :) )
Congressman Swalwell is a particularly interesting candidate because he is at the forefront of technology in the House (frequently called the "Snapchat Wonder Child of Congress" and is leading the charge for the Democrats on advancing the investigation into Russian meddling in our election. Three roles we are seeking here:
- Back-end engineering, working with web services, databases, data pipeline, data fidelity and security. ~5 hours a week.
- Data Analytics/Data Science/BI, and reporting. We are combining social data, donor data and other 3rd party data to create insights, action-dashboards. Familiarity with MySQL and BI tools please! ~5 hours a week.
- Senior advisor on Social. Congressman Swalwell is right at the tip of the spear of social media in government, and we are seeking a seasoned executive to serve as an advisor on the use of social for his campaign. (VP-level advisor) 3+ hours a month.

He's running against a Republican incumbent who doesn't even live in her district (!!!!) and has consistently failed to uphold the values of her constituents (in a district that voted for the progressive candidate in the most recent presidential election).
Brian is tech-smart and committed to using / building new tools to dramatically improve voter communication (he's even hired a CTO – a first for a congressional campaign – to oversee this effort!). He's a great candidate with the background and resources to turn a red district blue and was just featured in Bloomberg Business Week for breaking the record on amount of contributions received in bitcoin.
Brian is looking for 3 key roles to support his campaign:
- A full stack engineer to build tools using Ruby / Rails, React / Redux, APIs (Twilio, Stripe, Coinbase, HubSpot, etc), designed with Bootstrap and hosted on Heroku. ~5 hours a week.
- A graphic designer and for some work on forms and landing pages managed in HubSpot. Bonus for having front end experience with CSS/HTML. ~5 hours a week.
- A marketer/copywriter for onboarding emails for new donors, folks at house parties, newsletter and volunteer signups. ~5 hours a week.
