One of the council candidates is asking how much the city would save if they went with an open source platform to host city data verses Socrata? I think he's also interested in how much money the city could potentially save using more technology-driven solutions. Any thoughts so I can rely them back to him.

I dont know yet how much Socrata is costing them- it's under 50k a year. We should look at putting together some realistic scenarios for the city for a few systems including this- with practical options for simply rolling out an opensource tool themselves- given the tech skills that aren't inside city hall, yet, but also with a group like us or another opensource tech provider.

The larger savings are on things like their multi million dollar systems like Oracle v a postgresSQL swap, that asves bulk.

We can tap into the national brigade fr support on this, I know Raleigh is big on this with Jason Hibbets leading that one. It's a huge movement that we are hoping to encourage locally so we can leverage a lot of experience!

For now I don't know that we can respond accurately for the data portal- perhaps suggest that with staffing augmentation or with cross training of staff they could implement their own system fr $0 capital costs, $100/month for amazon hosting and staff time only.
