hi Nicole,  i had a good meet with with Ahsan, and mentioned the CityCamp event to him, too.

how do you imagine getting some specific agenda/speakers nailed down?  it seems we need to have some THERE there to make it seem worthwhile to either city employees or citizens.  i can imagine techy tutorials on open source tool sets, specific C4A_Oak projects that we're pursuing, ...?   - rik

One publicity idea: encourage people via twitter/FB to submit (to Google Moderator) topic or structure ideas for CityCamp. Then shout out / ask questions about those ideas via twitter/FB. Maybe precede with extent to which participants can shape the agenda (vs planners); still not clear to the public.

And/or pose questions about citizen/gov collaboration, both practical and philosophical, general and Oakland-specific. Nicole, maybe you could help frame the latter.

In short, questions that generate conversation --> participation. And connect to conversations like #oakmtg etc, and @[key political/tech/community/media figures]

Adam

PS, some smart ideas coming from here: https://twitter.com/OpeningGov

"We designed gov in 19th century with certain assumptions. We must now revisit what is best done by people vs. gov."-@alwalji #openinggov

"The @openinggov project is not to make smarter, decentralized, or collaborative government—it's to do all 3 at the same time.”#openinggov

One thing I observed at CityCamp Colorado 2 weeks ago is that they had an unconference portion run in parallel with the regular tracks. In the end nobody attended the unconference and they ended up canceling it. Later people complained they had to many presentations and not enough networking too. My observation is if you do an unconference portion pre-pick the topics and structure.

More outreach suggestions:

1. Build outreach list of key groups/individuals w/ contact info -- tech, City, community, media -- those we want to see there, and those that will help promote

2. Create at least one message for each community above that makes this relevant to their needs/wants. Adapt each message for FB, twitter, longer form (blog / press release)

3. Ask OpenOakland participants to make a habit of retweeting/sharing/liking CityCamp posts and tweets. @openoakland and @citycampoak are new/small accounts, but our collective reach is big, especially if we tap into CfA networks and high-profile supporters. Some could autoschedule tweets from their own accounts as well.

4. Per Kris's point, set a deadline to decide on sessions. Not having agenda outlined well in advance makes it hard to promote, hard for people to commit to attending. Before that, tweet/FB about agenda "so far," encouraging people to contribute.

5. If they build it, they will come: Engage broad community to build the agenda via social media:

A) Stimulate conversation with practical/philosophical questions on how citizens/City can co-create tech solutions for Oakland, what solutions are needed

B) Share examples of opengov solutions; many less-techies are vague on what opengov/opendata is; concrete examples of how it solves real problems relevant to everyone

C) Call on communities to propose / vote on sessions (maybe put a big "Create the Agenda" link to Moderator at top of CityCamp and OpenOakland sites, and on social media)

6. Once sessions are confirmed, focus invites on key stakeholders that can make impact, who know obstacles/opportunities, in each area

7. Articles in local news outlets that explain the co-creation of this event would be nice.

Few questions:

* How many rooms? In other words, 5 sessions per
http://citycampoak.org/agenda/ times what?
* If more than one room, how big each? Bigger one more highly curated, etc
* There's another group listed on http://citycampoak.org/ is that
where these discussions should be happening?

Some ideas:

* EFF is based in SF and doing an event in Oakland this week
https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2012/11/members-only-speakeasy-bay-area-aspiration
-- I imagine could have someone talk about government & tech privacy,
open wireless, probably other relevant topics I'm not thinking of at
the moment.
* Wikimedia also in SF, and lots of Wikipedians all over; lots of
Oakland/East Bay topics not well covered, especially
government/political ones -- something on how to improve relevant
material on Wikipedia and navigate the tech & community of doing so
* Mitch Kapor has is moving his operations to Oakland -
http://blog.mkf.org/2012/10/12/kapors-oakland-as-the-next-tech-frontier/
* SPUR occasionally does Oakland-focused stuff

And for sessions. I guess I'll just put these into moderator:

* Something about disaster preparedness and/or general resilience and
how open government data and community monitoring and applications can
help city & citizens prepare
* Something about how to successfully interact with open source
software communities (get support, report bugs, submit patches...)
* Autonomous vehicles, how can Oakland plan ahead for super impactful tech
* What does following through on the candidate pledge look like, for
officeholders and citizens? 2014?

And awesome time to promote all OpenOakland projects...

Anyone else able to go to the EFF event? I'd love to, but have two conflicts and a close friend in hospital about to give birth so will not likely make it..

Some of the things we needed to get written up based on last night's discussion include:
  • Press release
  • Public invite letter
  • Sponsor letter
  • List of people to target for speaking and attending
I've drafted a sponsor letter, can Adam and someone else take a pass at this asap:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1mW6Z-xY9sJt86HLLUnwTAVZzxd_6PchZgaZ3KUkkUR4/edit

here's the presser doc to work on: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1PVvlSF5-b7FLVKx7jIWUCPS2mub9c0z0dNaVB_vwBs0/edit

List of people to outreach to for speaking and for attending: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AgNZYWcpRBQ7dGlkeWQ5S0pvaEZHaTN4LXVONzJGVGc

Sounds like we have Sunlight Foundation on as a sponsor too, just working out details with them!

http://citycampoak.org is back up

I also wanted to mention I think we should improve the copy on the home page, but I don't have access to the account.

In particular:

"We are bringing citizens, city government, and businesses together to openly innovate and improve our quality of life through technology."

to:
"CityCamp Oakland brings citizens, city government, and businesses together to openly innovate, recognize the benefits of transparency, and utilize open source technology to improve quality of life in our communities."

Matt- what couldn't you access, you are an admin on the site. I made that text change you suggested too.

It seems that the site outage may have just been the DNS changing from openshift, a problem we anticipated, but their support didn't suggest it as a potential issue, if it goes down again we need to refresh the IP address their amazon service is using and update our registrat A record. The first outage was in fact an openshift maintenance. So far less than wonderful for wordpress!

Here's the copy for session "recipes" please hack/remix/improve/etc

Session Types

Since an unconference can be more conversational, consider using one (or more) of these session types or formats to help get the most out of City Camp Oakland:

Birds of a Feather - Convene a group around a shared interest, work domain, or topic. Aim to identify how this group can benefit from each other, such as through staying more connected, sharing best practices, etc.

Workshop - Teach/learn a skill, focus the session around a particular activity that can be accomplished in the available time.

Round-table - Specify a topic and hold a round-table discussion that investigates this topic from the varied perspectives in the room.

Demonstration - Share a topical project, story, result, tool, or strategy. Or, share multiple if there is time.

5 Minutes of Fame - Cut the session up into 5-minute (or similar) presentations by the attendees. This can be a generic session, or narrowed to a particular topic.

Clinic - Domain experts and practitioners provide intensive assistance to folks who are new to some particular areas.

Q&A - Bring a panel of a few folks together to answer questions on a topic of interest.

Matt- awesome, do you want to draft a post on this so we can proof it (or start as google doc for edits), then we can publish it- it's great content!

I've got the speaker invite note done now: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1VKpgqHJfzETQ-EN_7Gc8agVgWQ8knxv7IoioJZvnA5k/edit

Along with our list of requested speakers and topics here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AgNZYWcpRBQ7dGlkeWQ5S0pvaEZHaTN4LXVONzJGVGc

I'll do a post now on the topics we're looking at having, and the confirmed speakers too! Please send out the email to those you know or someone who should get added to the list ok!

lastly- we need a couple of volunteers to help arrange the catering on the day!

Let me know and I will arrange. I can ask about catering too.

Hey ya'll, I put an "engageoakland.com" link at the bottom of this post: http://citycampoak.org/wp-admin/post.php?post=94&action=edit&message=10

I finally took this as a chance to look at using engageoakland. I don't see any way to make it obvious for users to specifically post session ideas for "City Camp Oakland" and am starting to think that using the Google Moderator isn't just an arbitrary choice, it'll be more helpful to curate specific sessions and share with other City Camp Oakland attendees.

Also, can someone please proofread the post so I can publish it? Thanks,

// Matt
