Our fourth major project is to stand up and find/get/advocate for the data to make this a powerful tool for our community. The interest in this tool is driven heavily by businesses and the need to be able to locate property for new businesses and to understand the community housing fabric for blighted areas. There is widespread interest in this from community development, commercial real estate, policy and nonprofits as well as general interest.

The tool currently lives at http://chicagobuildings.org/ and the repo is here: https://github.com/open-city/vacant-building-finder

The team for this project will need to consider the possible and existing data to shoehorn into this app, which may well include the Acella system newly in place in Oak, as well as SeeClickFix data API and also consider the soon to be live BlightStat system built by Eddie's Code for America team as a potential tool for this need.

Team will include planners, data wrangling, developers and designer/UI and promotion.

this also seems like a potentially great project, connecting shareholders who don't even talk to each other ... yet!  here's hoping others know more details re: Accela, Open311... so much to learn.

like some earlier posts, this makes it seem like there are TWO SEPARATE CfA groups?!

Rik- this is the official brigade in Oakland yeah, there is another group Oakland based with some similar members but I'm not sure of their plans. Then there is the official fellowship crew from CfA, some of whom live in Oakland. And hopefully we will have a proper team of CfA fellows in city hall next year, which will be an awesome opportunity to connect a functioning brigade to an inside team!

It would be great to add crowdsourced data to the pool as well.  The well used and well tested tool built by Ushahidi is a great option:  https://crowdmap.com/

There are lots of tools that gave been developed, in the process of being developed and that will be developed.

But as we all know, building the tool is the easy part. Understanding the issues well enough to make decisions about the right tool is the hard part.

I agree, Rik, we need to bring  the people who are working on these issues together. I think it'd be great if we take stock of what we already know and discuss them here

I'd like to volunteer to work on this specific project and is where I hope to come into play with the Brigade and help educate the Brigade on how to access the data stored in Accela Automation using our Platform4Gov architecture. Oakland will be collecting a lot of the data surrounding property as they use the Accela system for Building, Code Enforcement and Service Request (311). Our unique architecture is ideal for building 3rd party web and mobile apps against the data in Accela Automation. .

I plan to attend the October meetup (I was out on vacation last week and missed Septembers meetup). This week myself and several other Accela team members will be attending the Code for America Summit in San Francisco and are excited at the potential here for opening up data for app development.

Indeed. I can help with the data wrangling and "crowd sourcing" as this crosses over into an Alco blight project I am working on.
[People particularly in Oakland's District 7 complain about blighted properties and trash dumping. So I am asking: How are the worst hit areas of Alameda County faring 5 years after the mortgage meltdown? D7 was one of the hardest hit if not THE hardest in the county. So what has the elected leadership done or not done?]
I can help with JS, JQuery, JQuery Mobile, HTML and CSS (I am a code recycler not a master).
But getting data and "interviewing" the data is where I will be most helpful.

I want to be part of this project too. I have backend PHP, Python skills + anything related to data - MySQL, Solr, Hadoop etc.

Planning to attend October meeting, but can get started even before that if required.

Thanks,
