Hello all

Just posting some information about a consortium project focused on
Africa. The consortium recently secured €‎3.6 million in funding from
the European Union in late August 2023. That posting:

https://openmod4africa.eu/openmod4africa-awarded-eu-funding

The project indicates a commitment to "open models" and the project
website suggests that "sharing" of data within the project is favored.

One key objective of the project is to "develop an open energy system
modelling toolbox tailored for African needs: the OM4A Toolbox".

My cursory impression is that there seems to relatively little
connection with the openmod community or to some of the more established
frameworks and projects within our community. But my impression could
easily be wrong! If anyone knows more, some additional background might
be helpful?

And if consortium members are present in the openmod community, perhaps
we should start talking? Usually best to build from the best available
base and not to reinvent established tooling and/or recollect and clean
datasets that already exist.

with best wishes, Robbie

Hi Robbie,

The Horizon Europe project openmod4africa is a successor, in a way, to the Horizon 2020 project openENTRANCE. The toolbox, models, format and database infrastructure in openmod4africa will continue the effort from openENTRANCE, also describe at https://openenergymodels.net/. There is no direct connection to the openmod community, the name overlap is rather due to the limited space of unused project names and abbreviations related to the words open and modelling.

The budget in openmod4africa is to a large part dedicated to our African partners so that they can attend training sessions and conduct policy-relevant case studies for their countries.

IIASA is participating in openmod4africa by providing a central database infrastructure for scenario analysis and dissemination as well as open-source Python packages for working with energy/climate scenario data, similar to our role in ECEMF, ARIADNE and other projects. We are currently overhauling the documentation of our infrastructure and tools, see http://docs.ece.iiasa.ac.at/.

By the way, we have an open position for a research software developer in my team, see here, for further developing our open-source software stack and new user-focused visualization tools and interfaces. Reach out anytime for more information.

Best,
Daniel
