Hello again all

I just tripped over some interesting work from the GenX crew based in Princeton in a newsletter from climate author Bill McKibben on the proposed One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA):

  • McKibben, Bill (23 May 2025). A truly dark day in DC. The Crucial Years. San Francisco, California, USA. Substack newsletter.

Scroll down one or two screens to find a summary of results by Jesse Jenkins and his team at REPEAT (Rapid Energy Policy Evaluation and Toolkit). For instance, the OBBBA will approximately:

  • Increase U.S. greenhouse gas emissions by roughly 0.5 billion metric tons per year in 2030 and more than 1 billion metric tons per year in 2035.

And so on. The REPEAT report itself is available on Zenodo:

  • Jenkins, Jesse, Jamil Farbes, Ryan Jones, Abigail Cheng, Qian Luo, and Benjamin Haley (22 May 2025). A fork in the road: impacts of Federal Policy repeal on the US energy transition — Version v4. Princeton, New Jersey, USA: REPEAT Project. doi:10.5281/zenodo.15486177. DOI resolves to latest version. CC‑BY‑4.0 license.

There are parallels here with the rapid attribution studies (RAS) from climate scientists that assess the increased likelihood of a particular extreme weather event given a changing climate. However their response time is slower, I would say their turnaround is probably more like weeks.

best, Robbie
