Hi All,

I'm pleased to invite you to a seminar that Bruno Borba of my ΔE+ Research Group will be giving on January 30 at 9 am Pacific Time.  See details below.

I look forward to seeing many of you there!

Cheers,
Taco..

Modelling Storage in Long Term Energy Planning Models

Modeling storage in long term energy planning models is challenging as the temporal resolution of such models is often limited.  Accurately representing the operation of storage in such models is therefore an active research area.  However, the algorithms and methods for modelling storage are rarely investigated, with most studies simply adopting an algorithm and assuming it works as expected.  We rectify this by investigating the interplay between temporal aggregation and storage algorithms for models of systems with high penetrations of variable renewable energy (VRE). We discuss gaps in the literature by evaluating various aggregation techniques and storage modeling approaches, including direct linking and enhanced periods. Through comparisons of computational running times and storage costs with hourly simulations in the OSeMOSYS energy system model, we will provide actionable insights and identify best practices for incorporating storage modelling in long-term energy system optimization models.

Bruno Borba is an Associate Professor in the Electrical Engineering Department at Fluminense Federal University in Brazil. He is currently involved in postdoctoral research under the supervision of Professor Taco Niet at Simon Fraser University (SFU), concentrating on the development and implementation of storage solutions, performance optimization, and automation within the the BC Nexus long term optimization model. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, a Master of Science (M.Sc.) and a Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) in Energy Planning. His research expertise lies in energy modeling and planning, with a focus on the design and analysis of long-term energy scenarios and models at both local and national levels.
