Dear All,
==========================
EMP-AFRICA School: Led by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa an invitation is extended to African-based researchers who want to enter the world of open-source energy planning. If you'd be so kind, please do forward to anyone who you know may be keen! Announcing the 5th Annual Energy Modelling Platform for Africa! (See attached for more info)

Peeps can apply for one of 5 independent tracks. Of which 3 are open-source. (So you can stay untainted here 🙂).
  • Open-Source Spatial Electrification Tool (OnSSET.org/GloabalElectrificationPlatform.org)
  • The Open-Source energy Modelling System (OSeMOSYS.org)
  • national integrated assessment model of Climate, Land, Energy and Water Systems (CLEWS)
There are two open-access courses. Just calling those out, so they don't cause confusion; get Open-Washed; or Smear the Open-Goodness of the first three tracks 🙂. Those are:
  • Model for the Analysis of Energy Demand (MAED) and Energy Balance Studio (EBS)
  • The Financial Planning model, FinPlan
Spaces are limited, competition is high. But for those that get through it is FREE (thank you to those that sponsor, contribute in-kind and volunteer for this!!). In keeping with concurrently empowering a leading African University it is being held at the University of Namibia.

If you want to (re)post a link on social media, I'd super-duper grateful (Energy Modelling Platform for Africa (EMP-A) - 2023 | Events (uneca.org)).
==========================
AFRICAN MSc scholarships: If you are an African and interested in picking up OSeMOSYS and CLEWs in an MSc and write a thesis on the same. Please consider applying for these funded positions (https://www.lboro.ac.uk/study/postgraduate/fees-funding/masters-funding/loughborough-development-trust-africa-scholarship/)
==========================
Competitive PhD Scholarships: Finally, and open to all: we also have a few PhD scholarships at Loughborough University. If any open-source elements of www.ClimateCompatibleGrowth.com appeal and you feel inspired to advance, please feel free to write a proposal and contact me. It is a competition. So goodluck!
==========================
And a couple of groovy new peer reviewed papers
(*The name of the new open-source planning software has to be inspired from the collective unconsciousness that ties us into the origins of open source energy modelling ...)

Best, Mark
