Hello!

We have lots of news to spread that we hope you'll be excited about, first of which is that you'll be hearing from us more regularly. We know our updates have been very haphazard, but never fear – we won't let months go by without an update again, so get excited!

*

First up, this month we’re releasing Dubravka Ugresic's new book, Karaoke Culture. This book is wonderfully funny, addressing the current state of global culture in a way that both condemns and celebrates the modern day common man, someone who mimics as opposed to creates, an amateur as opposed to an auteur. Ugresic uses hotel minibars, Tito memorabilia, fan-fic writers, and Victoria Beckham as proof of this new society that values the right to be heard over the right to fine art, never losing an ounce of wit or intelligence in the process.

The Paris Review will be excerpting this in the near future, and it’s sure to get a lot of review coverage. You can order a copy directly from our website for $12.75 (a 20% discount), or from better bookstores everywhere.

Additionally, if you’re in the NY area, Dubravka will be speaking at the St. Mark’s Bookshop on Tuesday, October 11th at 7pm. And for those of you near Boston, she’ll be at Brookline Booksmith on Friday, October 14th at 7pm.

For those who aren’t already subscribers (or need to renew), we have a special subscription offer: If you sign up for a five-book subscription by the end of October, we'll give you another book for free, and if you sign up for a ten-book subscription, we'll throw in two extra books for free. Who doesn't love free stuff, especially books? For $60, you get six books delivered to your door, and for $100, you get twelve, so make sure to subscribe—or renew—now at http://catalog.openletterbooks.org/subscribe/

Last, but certainly not least, we want to introduce you to Read This Next. It’s a special new website where we post a weekly “extended advance preview” of a book that we’ve handpicked from among all the titles that are forthcoming from the best publishing houses—along with an interview with the author or translator and a detailed review of the book. You can read the excerpts online, or you can download the free e-book excerpt and read it on your e-reader of choice.

This week’s Read This Next title is David Bellos's Is That a Fish in Your Ear? Claiming to be about “translation and the meaning of everything,” this book has a tall order to fill, and according to Chad Post's recent review it does all that and more. Importantly, Is That a Fish in Your Ear? is welcoming to those inside and outside the world of translations, which keeps it from becoming something like a pretentious bit of insider knowledge. (If you do want insider knowledge, though, this book delivers . . .) Make some time to sneak a peek at this week’s Read This Next for an informative, enjoyable look at the art of translation—and the meaning of everything.

Until next time,
Liz Mullins
