Hello and Happy New Year!

These past few weeks have been really exciting ones for Open Letter, mainly thanks to all of the press coverage we've been getting (or are about to get).

Most notably is this article that Larry Rohter wrote for the New York Times about Open Letter, Three Percent, and the University of Rochester's Literary Translation Studies Programs. Larry's a very interesting person in his own right—he was the South American correspondent for the Times for more than a decade, is an author of both fiction and nonfiction, and is married to a translator—and it was great talking with him about all of the various facets of our enterprise.

There are also forthcoming pieces in both Publishers Weekly and the Chronicle of Higher Education that will include Open Letter references, so be on the lookout, or just check in with Three Percent—we'll definitely link to both as soon as they're available.

As a sort of "holiday present" (and better than a tie!), we've just released our Summer 2010 catalog. Click here for a Three Percent post that includes a link to the pdf version of the catalog along with descriptions and excerpts of all five titles.

I'm really excited about this list (admittedly, I'm excited about all our lists), and think you will be too. As always, you can subscribe to Open Letter and get a year's worth of titles (10 in all) for $100 or six month's worth for $60. (Shipping is free for all subscribers.)

In addition to the books themselves, subscribers receive some additional information about the book—sometimes an interview, an essay written by the author/translator—and a letter from me explaining why we're publishing this particular title, how we found out about it, etc. Not a huge incentive, but if you're interested in the inner workings of Open Letter . . .

Here are the spring/summer titles:

Finally, moments ago the fiction longlist for the 2010 Best Translated Book Award was unveiled on Three Percent. Four Open Letter books made it—Death in Spring, Vilnius Poker, The Discoverer, and The Mighty Angel—and I highly recommend checking out the entire list. Some of my favorite books of the past year are on here: The Confessions of Noa Weber by Gail Hareven, The Zafarani Files by Gamal al-Ghitani, Ghosts by César Aira, and on and on.

And be sure to check back in on Tuesday, February 16th when we announce the 10 fiction and 10 poetry finalists. . .

Best,
Chad
