On Saturday evening, the National Book Critics Circle announced the finalists for their annual book awards, and we're proud to announced that one of our titles—Karaoke Culture by Dubravka Ugresic—is one of the five finalists in the "Criticism" category.

Since this is the first major American book award that Open Letter has a finalist in, we're absolutely ecstatic. And it's especially fitting that this is happening to Dubravka, since her last collection, Nobody's Home, was the first book that Open Letter ever published.

I've been personally going on and on about how Karaoke Culture was one of the best books to come out in 2011, but if you haven't heard/read about this book, it's a collection of sharp, witty, perceptive essays about contemporary culture, the Internet, and minibars. (The minibar essay got a lot of attention after it appeared in The Paris Review.) The idea of "karaoke culture"--in which people prefer to imitate stars rather than create their own original art and sense of self—is the basis behind the title essay, which may well be the most concentrated and impressive thing Dubravka has ever written.

To celebrate this honor, you can purchase a copy of Karaoke Culture through our website for $9.99.

Or, if you want to support Open Letter by subscribing to all of our titles, we will throw in a free copy of Karaoke Culture.

You can read about all the finalists for the NBCCs here and I want to thank you for your continued support of Open Letter, and for helping us spread the word about Dubrakva's accomplishment.
