Conqueror Giveaway

In honor of the "starred" review Jan Kjaerstad's The Conqueror received from Kirkus Reviews yesterday, we're giving away five copies of the galley. (The book itself won't be available until early February.) Absolutely brilliant, this novel is the second book in the "Wergeland Trilogy," three independent, yet interconnected novels that tell of the life of famous TV-producer Jonas Wergeland and the death of his wife Margrete from three very different perspectives. Called a "sprawling postmodern whodunit" by Kirkus, The Conqueror opens with Jonas in prison for murdering his wife. In this intricate, ambitious novel, Kjaerstad weaves together dozens of stories and events from Jonas's past in an attempt to explain how one becomes a murderer. More info is available on our website.

We have five copies of this Scandinavian "literary thriller" available—if you want to be entered in the drawing for this, simply e-mail me at chad...@rochester.edu before December 29th.

The Sailor from Gibraltar now available

This month's new release is also our first "Open Letter Modern Classic": The Sailor from Gibraltar by Marguerite Duras. The story of a wealthy American woman sailing the seas for her sometimes lover (sounds like a plot line from Lost), Sailor is a beautifully written, incredibly sandy book. It's also an early novel of Duras's and one of her absolute best. (Although I haven't heard many good things about the movie version . . .) The dialogue is spot on and this story of love and boredom is captivating. It's also a nice change of pace from snowy Rochester, and a book that will live on for many years to come—a true "Modern Classic." For the next few weeks, we're offering this through our website for only $9.99. Click here for more details.

Next 6, Next 12 Subscriptions

As many of you know, we've been selling Open Letter subscriptions since the launch of the Press. Recently, we made the subscriptions a bit more flexible. You can still purchase the books by season ($65 for one six book season, $120 for two), but now you can also buy a subscription to the "next six" or "next twelve" titles. Subscribers get a book a month along with a special letter with info about the book or author and about why we chose to publish this particular title. By subscribing you'll never miss an Open Letter title, and you'll be supporting the publication and promotion of international literature. And for those who are still doing their holiday shopping, an Open Letter subscription makes a wonderful gift . . .

Best Translated Book Award

Over at the Three Percent blog, we recently announced the fiction longlist for the "Best Translated Book of 2008." We started this award last year as a reaction to the fact that most year-end lists don't contain a single work in translation. This year our panel of eight voracious readers selected what they feel are the strongest international works to come out this year. Open Letter got one book onto the list—The Taker and Other Stories by Rubem Fonseca. To see the complete list, click here. I'm also profiling these books day-by-day . . . You can see all the write-ups by visiting here.
