Hi—
It's hard to believe that we've only been publishing books for a year. (At least it's hard for me to believe.) But it's true—we brought out Dubravka Ugresic's Nobody's Home on September 26th of last year. And now, thirteen months later (almost to the day) we're about to receive our first New York Times book review!
The October 25th issue will include a review (hopefully positive!) of The Discoverer by Jan Kjaerstad, the third and final volume in the "Wergeland Trilogy." And to celebrate, we're having a special 2 for $22 sale—more on that below.
We brought out the second volume of the trilogy (The Conqueror) earlier this year, and were pleasantly shocked by all the great notes we received from readers, reviewers, and booksellers. Really shouldn't have been a surprise though—this is one of the most compelling, fascinating books we'd published to date.
As you may already know, the trilogy consists of three books centered on the life of TV producer Jonas Wergeland and the death of his wife. Each book presents a different version of Jonas's life—sometimes retelling the same story with a different slant, sometimes telling new stories—and a different explanation for his wife's death.
The Seducer (available from Overlook) takes place as Jonas arrives home and finds his dead wife. The Conqueror takes place when Jonas is in prison for murder. And The Discoverer is narrated in part by Jonas, after he's been released.
These can be read separately—and as Jan mentioned during his U.S. tour, no single volume should be elevated above the others in terms of being the most “true”—and taken as a whole, the trilogy is an absolute masterpiece.
For more info on Jan and his books, visit our author page or watch this Reading the World Conversation Series event with Jan and Mark Binelli. There's also a RTWCS event today (the 20th) at 6:30 pm at Rush Rhees Library on the University of Rochester's campus, featuring Jorge Volpi and Alfred Mac Adam.
Now, about this 2 for $22 thing . . . Well, we just published our twelfth book, and it seems fitting to close out this first year of Open Letter with a special offer for all our supportive readers. For a limited time (until November 22nd), you can get any 2 books we've published to date for $22. And when you do, you'll be entered in a drawing with a chance to win a free year's subscription to Open Letter. Click here to order.
Enjoy!
