Dear Reader,

It was almost exactly two years ago that the University of Rochester started Open Letter Books. True, our first book just came out a few short months ago, but prior to that we helped create the University's literary translation programs, launched Three Percent (one of a handful of websites dedicated to promoting international literature), provided dozens of interns with practical publishing experience, developed the only existing translation database, started the "Best Translated Book of the Year" award, and arranged a series of events—including a special night with Salman Rushdie and Umberto Eco. Overall, we've gotten off to a pretty good start, but with your help we can accomplish even more in 2009.

All of these activities are in support of our guiding mission, which is to publish and promote great works of international literature, providing readers with access to other cultures, and celebrating the diversity of voices found throughout the world. Essentially, we're addressing Nobel Prize secretary Horace Engdahl's concerns that Americans are "too isolated, too insular" due to the lack of international literature making its way into English.

We'd like to thank you for your continued support, and share with you three ways that you can help Open Letter grow and achieve its mission:

  1. MAKE A DONATION. Your participation helps ensure the success of Open Letter. Your gift of $50, $100, $250 (or more!) directly funds translators and authors, and our public event programs. Visit http://www.openletterbooks.org/donations/ to support international literature.
  2. BUY A BOOK OR SUBSCRIPTION. The most important thing we do is connect readers with international writers via the publication of our titles. At http://catalog.openletterbooks.org/ you can purchase an individual title, or by visiting http://www.openletterbooks.org/subscribe/ you can get a subscription to Open Letter and receive a new book each month from a different part of the world.
  3. SPREAD THE WORD. By passing along this e-mail, or recommending one of our books, or talking to your local bookstore about Open Letter, or mentioning us on your blog, or on Facebook, you're helping raise the awareness of Open Letter and international literature as a whole—a very worthy activity that's easy to accomplish and makes a big difference.

Please consider making a donation to Open Letter to help us start 2009 in the best position possible. Even a monthly donation of $5 or $10 supports all of our activities, allowing us to reach as many readers as possible. All donors and subscribers receive our monthly newsletter and information about all forthcoming events.

Again, thanks for your continued support, and all of us at Open Letter wish you a happy holiday season.

Best,
Chad
