Hi Everyone,

I was having a discussion with Marc Farra, and here's few ideas that comes to mind that we want to be involved in, hopefully in the near future as part of Open Leb community.

First step is to find the right donor/support to some of these activities.

Please share any ideas or thoughts!

Nouwweb

  • Expanding on dataset using other parameters such as education level, laws voted on, appearance record, parliamentary committees and making them machine readable

  • Hackathon to build on top of the Nouwweb dataset to raise awareness and teach data journalists how to use the API

  • Publishing an analysis detailing the network of voting relationships between MPs

  • Creating an application to contact MPs during critical voting periods (tweet storm, social media pressure).

Laws of Lebanon

  • Digitizing laws, decisions, voting of the parliament between 1950-2008 to make it searchable and public under reusable open data licenses (might need volunteers and could use an event such as a data hackathon)

  • Building applications on top of digitized laws such as statistics, visualizations and correlation with other datasets

OpenStreetMap Lebanon

  • Initiative for community mapping in Lebanon in cities other than Beirut

  • Teaching data journalists and programmers how to better use open street map to power their articles and visualizations

Online course on open data

  • Civic society has a lack of technical knowledge regarding existing open data projects and initiatives and there are very little resources targeting the Arab region

  • Create online courses in collaboration with the Open Knowledge foundation dealing with open data licenses, data wrangling, publishing and visualization

  • Online courses will target 30 Arabic speaking participants from Arab countries and will be picked on an application basis

  • The course will be 6-8 weeks in length and include a capstone project of the participant’s choosing

To expand a bit on what I meant as first step:

We need a lot of technical help and community support to be able to do so, and this is essential to the success of any idea, and that's why we are all here.

Thx
M

Mahaban,

interesting ideas - especially OSM contributions could be useful to a lot of people, I think.

What do you think of an adaptation of something like Congress-Edits to Lebanon? If it's feasible to come up with some relevant IP ranges - of government or party offices etc. - I think it would be interesting to see who edits what. And, first of all, if any one of them is active on Wikipedia at all, of course.

Cheers,
Johann
