Hey guys,
First of all, forgive me if this is a subject that has already been posted - I haven't had time to have a good read of what's here. Please guide me to the appropriate thread if need be, cheers.
Basically my problem is that I'm brand new to Kinect hacking and am following this guide http://www.kinecthacks.com/guides/install-kinect-on-your-pc-and-start-developing-your-programs-disclaimer/ which up until now I've had little trouble with (the only trouble being, and it isn't just on this site, that every hyperlink to the openni software downloads page at openni.org says it "can't be found," am I the only one having this problem?), usually solved by just googling what I needed (i.e. NITE).
My problem is that at step 4 it says to download "OpenNI Compliant Hardware Binaries", which as I've previously mentioned doesn't show up. So after a quick google search I found myself at git.hub downloading what I thought was it, but it just turned out to be the general OpenNI binaries, NOT the compliant hardware binaries. I can't seem to find it anywhere else either.
If anyone could help me out with this that would be awesome. Does anyone have a direct link to where I can find these hardware binaries?
I'm excited to get this up and running!
Thanks,
Jimmy.

Hi Jimmy - it has changed so the current OpenNI downloads now include the Primesense hardware driver, there is no separate hardware binary.  That driver works for the Primesense Carmine cameras as well as the ASUS Xtions.  If you are using a Kinect, you'll still need a driver for it, try: https://github.com/avin2/SensorKinect

That being said, this is the list for libfreenect, not OpenNI.  I don't think libfreenext works with OpenNI, but honestly I've never tried, does it?  Anyone?  Bueller?

Ciao!

Thanks Lorne, that's good to know thanks :) does anyone know of any more modern tutorials I could follow then? I tried the link, but it didn't work and a couple of other things went wrong (primesense wouldn't show up in my device manager, other stuff wouldn't show up like in that tutorial etc.) so I've decided to start over.
I heard that NITE is purely optional, so I'm guessing all I need are the Kinect drivers and openNI right?
Cheers,
Jimmy

You should take this over to the OpenNI forums rather than here; this list is for libfreenect and not really the place for OpenNI help.  But one more tip: make sure your camera is NOT plugged into a USB3 port (they are usually blue) and ideally is on a USB2 controller by itself.

The OpenNI community support area: http://community.openni.org/openni

Good luck!
