Hi all,

I want to share my latest maps made with Open JUMP.
They can also be found on Wikimedia Commons.

A general map of the Roman Empire in AD 125, with physical background:

And the political version:

Regarding the creation of the maps, I find Open JUMP to be the most vector-friendly open source GIS software. The preparation of the datasets (rivers, lakes, sea, roads, borders) was really piece of cake, especially after the 2 bugs regarding 'Merge features' and the fill closed area tool were solved. The offset curve command was very useful for making administrative boundaries parallel with water courses. I'm also thankful that Geoffrey Roy has added a scaling option for Printer svg outputs. There's no need for any further rescaling in Inkscape now.

Of course the maps were not entirely made with Open JUMP. The shaded relief was made in GRASS and improved in GIMP, since Sextante-shaded relief is not as powerful (and you can only use it for ASCII files, and not for DEM's). And the legend and curved labels were made in Inkscape. Actually, I chose to write all the labels in Inkscape, since text is transformed to paths when the map is exported from Open JUMP. Because of this, no further text edits (like making curved labels, changing size and fonts) can be made.

Overall, I'm satisfied with the latest version of Open JUMP. Of course, there are some minor style options which could be added (like more px steps for line widths; e.g. 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2 and so on). And a curved labels option would be nice as well. But I'm not sure if these are really needed. OJ is more focused on elegant vector editing and analysis, not on map layouts. If I remember, even ArcGIS10 made clumsy curved labels, so in the end you always have to use a vector graphics editor to polish your maps.

Regards,
Andrei

Hi Andrei,

Fantastic!  Your maps are truly inspiring.  Thanks for sharing your work.

Inkscape is a wonderful tool.  It also has unequaled capabilities to edit PDF.  In my limited experience using it, PDF import seems to have a higher fidelity translator than SVG.  Have you tried it?  Text comes in as text.

regards,

Larry Becker

Thanks Larry,

Sure, I know you can open PDF docs with Inkscape.
Unfortunately even PDF's exported from Open JUMP have the text transformed to paths.

Hey Andrei.

as Larry, I am impressed too.

Btw. after following this tutorial from the MapBox folks on the using
gdal, I found it also very easy to use nice terrains visualisazions with
it:
http://mapbox.com/tilemill/docs/guides/terrain-data/

maybe it helps you too? (faster than GRASS, I guess)

cheers, and keep up the good work!

Hi Andrei,
really nice work. As cartographer and geologist I am really impressed about the details of your maps.
I agree with Stefan that GDAL is a valid substitute of GRASS, I used it some years ago to made some maps of Atacame desert of Chile (from DTM) with very good resaults.

Thanks guys,

The tutorial from mapbox is really useful. Is there any control over azimuth and light direction with GDAL? I usually create my shaded relief by overlaying 3 or 4 files with different azimuth in GIMP.

That's right ede,

I've also uploaded the maps as svg:

You can open these files in Inkscape and view the layer structure. The rasters are there as well.

Beyond the facts, I have no words but I do have a bash script for making shaded relieves with gdal that surely can be improved. Color ramp (ramp.txt) is only to give you the idea.
#!/bin/bash
# Three files are needed a) Digital Elevation Model b) ramp.txt c) ramp-slope.txt
# This script will produce a series of map that can be later used to make a cool map of the DEM region covered.
# The DEM must be projected, uncomment the proper line to project a EPSG:4326 file

echo 'Which Digital Elevation Model (in this folder you need a ramp.txt and ramp-slopte.txt)'
read file

gdalwarp -s_srs epsg:4326 -t_srs epsg:900913 $file "${file%%.*}.tif"
gdaldem hillshade -co compress=lzw "${file%%.*}.tif" "${file%%.*}_h.tif"
gdaldem color-relief -co compress=lzw "${file%%.*}.tif" ramp.txt "${file%%.*}_col.tif"
gdaldem slope -co compress=lzw "${file%%.*}.tif" "${file%%.*}_pen.tif"
gdaldem color-relief -co compress=lzw "${file%%.*}_pen.tif" ramp_slope.txt "${file%%.*}_pencol.tif"

Hi Agustin,

Feel free to write about content mistakes on the map's wiki commons discussion page, or write me an e-mail.

Being a total beginner with GDAL I got stuck already. My dem is not processed and I get this message: Option -cd incomplete or not recognized. My command looked like this: gdaldem hillshade -cd compress=lzw EUR.tif EUR.tif. It'a strange that I have to use a .tif ending for a dem input.

Hi,

- It is -co (creation option).
- You do not need to use .tif ending for the dem input, it just happens to
be that in the example dem is stored as tiff
- EUR.tif EUR.tif will not work, you must give input_file output_file and
they cannot be the same.

So start with

gdaldem hillshade -of GTiff -co compress=lzw input_dem.ext
output_hillshade.tif

-of GTiff is optional because geotiff is the default output but it is a
good habbit to select the outputformat so you do not need to remember what
is the default. Option compress=deflate will lead to a bit smaller file, I
believe.

Hi Austin,
thanks to share your script. I did a similar job three years ago, with a seres of batch scripts (only for dos), to do conversions and analysis on raster layer (included slope, aspect, hillshade and color-relief).
I share that job. There are many batch but the text explain everyting.

Hi Jukka,

I made a typing error in my previous message (cd instead of ca). But the output name was wrong. I looked at the mapbox tutorial and haven't noticed the output name had a hillshade_ placed before.

Now it works, but with an ASCII file. I don't know why my DEM can't be processed. Perhaps because it's not in a Geographic or UTM projection. Even gdalinfo can't open it.

Thanks for your help,
Andrei

Hi,

Now it's my turn to share a GDAL .bat file. It will produce 4 shaded relief files (azimuth of 135, 275, 315 and 355), plus a slope map and a color map using Agustin's ramp.txt.

gdaldem hillshade -co compress=lzw -compute_edges -az 315 -alt 60 -z 2 in_relief.asc 315.tif
gdaldem hillshade -co compress=lzw -compute_edges -az 275 -alt 60 -z 2 in_relief.asc 275.tif
gdaldem hillshade -co compress=lzw -compute_edges -az 355 -alt 60 -z 2 in_relief.asc 355.tif
gdaldem hillshade -co compress=lzw -compute_edges -az 135 -alt 60 -z 2 in_relief.asc 135.tif
gdaldem slope -co compress=lzw in_relief.asc slope.tif
gdaldem color-relief -co compress=lzw slope.tif rampslope.txt slope_col.tif
gdaldem color-relief -co compress=lzw in_relief.asc ramp.txt relief_col.tif

All you need is to merge the 6 files with a Multiply mode in GIMP (or another raster graphics editor) and remove the grey background. I created a short video tutorial on how to do this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dUDKzimx3So

The resulting relief, imported in OpenJUMP, can be seen in the attached screen capture.

P.S. For generalizing and smoothing elevation models you can use a small program called Terrain Sculptor (free open source): http://www.terraincartography.com/terrainsculptor/

Regards,
Andrei

My base dem is a SRTM 30 mosaic, clipped by an OpenJUMP Fence layer using GDAL command -crop to cutline, and smoothed using Terrain Sculptor (http://www.terraincartography.com/terrainsculptor/).

Thanks,
I can confirm that your bat commands work elsewhere with pretty results.
Only one thing if I'm not wrong, before going into gimp we need to flag relief_col.tif with -co TFW=YES, on the contrary openJump will misplace the result.

Yes, you need a tfw file. I simply copied the tfw from the cropped elevation file.
I'm glad the .bat works for you.
