Arthouse2B is thrilled to announce Becoming Becoming, a solo exhibition of works by Joséphine Dubern, which will be presented at The Sheen Center for Thought and Culture from August 6-28th.
Dubern, an artist and mother of two, has created a prolific body of engaging, colorful abstract works that span the time before her becoming a mother, up until, and after, the birth of her two children. The exhibition will explore what it means to be an artist specifically in the context of motherhood: What does it mean to be an artist before versus after having a child? How does the process of creating a work as an artist relate to the process of creating a new life within oneself? What can an artist who is a mother specifically offer the Art World, an artistic landscape that has historically not been the most welcoming to such a state of life?
Becoming Becoming examines how mothers are ontologically gestational– creative in the very nature of their being.
The exhibition, curated by Lucy Rahner and Erin McAtee, will be on display in the Dilenschneider Gallery at the Sheen Center for Thought and Culture (18 Bleecker Street) from August 6-28th. There will be an opening reception on August 7th from 5:30-7:30pm.
For two nights only, Dubern's work will be accompanied by a special gallery performance created by Karina Majewski that will delve into the twin vocations of artist and mother and how they are embodied.
