Hi all,

To overcome internet connectivity problems when travelling I have a copy of the open-IHM installer on my flash drive/memory stick, and recently when putting that into my laptop I get the attached alert from Windows Defender.

I don't know whether this is anything to worry about - Windows 8 makes it very difficult to even start the installer in the first place, as it isn't 'commonly' done - but thought I'd post it here in case you can tell from that alert whether Windows Defender has just misidentified a legitimate part of the installer, whether there's an actual worm in the installer or whether I might have picked up a virus on my memory stick from someone. I can't find a version of the file ending with ".lnk".

Many thanks,

Wolf

Hi there,

I won't have access to a Windows machine with Administrator privileges until Friday pm, but I'll have a look then. If it is a problem then it should be possible to issue a new installer with Colin's scripts, so long as we remember not to bump the version number :)

Regards,

Sarah

I had a go at scanning the 1.5.1 installer with Avast and it didn't find any problems, perhaps it is your memory stick? If you have an anti-virus system it might be possible to scan the USB stick separately and maybe download a fresh copy of the IHM installer?

Regards,

Sarah

Great, thanks - I think it's unlikely to be anything to worry about but thought I'd better let you know just in case!

Hi Wolfe,

I suspect you have somehow picked up a virus on your memory stick. I
just tried the windows installer myself with Windows Defender
installed and got not alerts, and saw nothing suspicious. The error
you're pointing to does look decidedly hinky, specifically the
extension .exe.lnk looks strange. I'd just allow the virus checker to
remove those files.

Thanks for the advice - now I'm back I've deleted that file and downloaded a
fresh copy of the open-IHM installer, which seems to be fine.
