IssuerMismatch: 'https://accounts.google.com' != 'accounts.google.com'

I'm trying to access accounts.google.com through the Python oic library, and get the error message mentioned in the subject. My reading of the spec suggests that this is a misconfiguration of the Google OpenID Connect provider, and Hans Zandbelt agrees in

claiming that Google is aware of this issue, and cannot change the configuration anymore as this would break existing installations. If this is the case, can someone at Google please document this deviation somewhere?
