Transparency Caucus Briefing:

Harvesting the Web and Preserving Electronic Government Data

Wednesday, February 1, 2:00pm

Rayburn 2456

Dear Colleague,

Please join me at the next Transparency Caucus briefing titled “Harvesting the Web and Preserving Electronic Government Data.”

In this digital age, the preservation of government webpages and data is vital to ensuring we maintain important historical information. This became of particular concern after the National Archives and Records Administration announced in 2008 that it would be unable to continue archiving the critical research, reports, and data that only exist electronically, ultimately threatening the permanent loss of these records. Leading up to the presidential administration transition in 2009, the End of Term Archives and other volunteer groups, libraries, and universities began crowdsourcing the work of archiving government information in jeopardy of simply being discarded. Changes in administration pose a particular concern over ensuring the preservation of public records. To best hold government officials accountable and ensure the public remains our most diligent watchdog, it is essential we focus on ways to support programs and groups dedicated to protecting government data.

Join us as the Transparency Caucus welcomes a panel of speakers to discuss the challenges we face in harvesting and preserving government data, and work to bring greater transparency to the federal government.

Opening Remarks by:

Congressman Mike Quigley & Congressman Darrell Issa

Panelists:

Alex Howard, Sunlight Foundation

Abbie Grotke, Library of Congress

Bethany Wiggin, University of Pennsylvania

Please RSVP here if you are able to join us. If you have any questions, please contact Brooke Stuedell in Rep. Quigley’s office at Brooke....@mail.house.gov.

Sincerely,

Mike Quigley
