Location Hierarchy and ID generation

After the OpenHDS expo, I have been looking particularly at the location hierarchy interface and to reason out its implementation on the ground.  One good thing about the OpenHDS is the ability to generate its own internal ids randomly.  This has resolved the problem of security with individual identification as it was with HRS.  With this feature data can easily be given out without the external know IDs of individuals etc.  However, these external known IDs are very critical tools when it comes to field work i.e. locating houses, migrants, selection of areas for an intervention etc.  This is where I took the interest to look at the “Location Hierarchy” implementation and how IDs are generated.  Maybe these examples will best explain my point so that “Location Hierarchy” tool will figure out the implementation.

Navrongo – the DSS site is being clustered and coded and within each cluster, houses were numbered.  From there, the eternal IDs were generated

Dodowa – the DSS site is grouped into area councils and coded and each is then classified into their communities (coded) and within each community, the houses are numbered.  From there, the eternal IDs were generated

Kintampo – the study area is grouped into villages (coded) and within each village, houses were numbered.  From there, the eternal IDs were generated but due to FWA operations, after number the houses in each village, they were clustered alphabetically.

Nahuche – the study area is grouped into districts (coded).  Each district then clustered alphabetically and within each cluster, the houses were numbered.  From there, the eternal IDs were generated.

This, however, is not a problem with sites that have passed the baseline and are now running updates.  The problem then comes when new external IDs are to be generated for BIRTHS, External Inmigration and Temporary IDs because it will have to conform to the inherited ID generation procedures illustrated above.  For new site, it may be just following the location hierarchy approach with some modifications, maybe.

Hi Peter, I just wanted to follow up on this. I apologize, but I'm not sure I completely understand your question or concern here. Do you see something you feel should change in the Location Hierarchy?

Look forward to hearing back from

Thanks

Dave

Hi Dave,

Nice getting back to you.  The point I am making here is for you to understand how some site have build up their Location Hierarchy and based on that IDs were generated.  There was no any other better way than giving some scenarios.  The Location Hierarchy implemented by OpenHDS is okay but that may affect older site that have developed a system of generating IDs for Locations, Socialgroups, Individuals etc.  Please, what do you think about that?

Regards

Peter

Hello Peter,

Greetings ! Thank you for the detailed insight into the various techniques for forming IDs. It is very helpful.

When you say "it may affect older sites" ... do you mean that there will need to be a data migration process that builds the location hierarchy for sites that want to transition to the OpenHDS ? If so, I completely agree.

Great to hear from you,
Bruce

Hi Bruce,

Very happy to hear from you.  I think that is what I could not explain better.  You’ve gotten my point.

“be a data migration process that builds the location hierarchy for sites that want to transition to the OpenHDS”

Regards

Peter
