Morning everyone,

The City emailed me late last week and they are looking to provide waste collection data in an open format.
They hope to see a mobile product result and are, wisely, looking to release data instead of their normal procedures.

There's a post on the OH blog calling for volunteers to lead this by meeting with the City and providing the data specifications: http://blog.openhamilton.ca/2012/02/open-hamilton-looking-for-waste.html

I've been looking forward to this topic. It's great that they'll be
providing this data and I'd like to help work on an app like this. I
actually started building something like this a while back and hit a
few small roadblocks. The intention was to build something that could
apply to many municipalities, with Hamilton getting a free version.
Other municipalities would pay a licensing fee. I personally don't
care about the licensing model. I'd rather see people have it in their
hands and benefit from the feedback to create a better application.
I've attached the wireframe of what I had planned.

A waste app and a standard for trash data already exists, in use by
20ish munis see HTTP://recollect.net and the TRON spec and @lukec Luke
Closs is the developer. Started as VanTrash.

The TRON spec is here: https://recollect.net/tron-spec.txt
Recollect also has API's: https://recollect.net/api

Luke just did a preso at URISA on sustainable open data innovation &
Recollect: http://www.slideshare.net/lukec/sustainable-innovation-with-open-data

When I was at the Nanaimo hackathon, a couple dev's there converted
their city data into TRON in a couple of hours and had a fully
functional app

Not that there shouldn't be more apps like that, or better/different
ways to managing Waste Collection Data -- the more the better I guess;
but the opportunity to extend & build on the work of others with a
spec like TRON may be something to consider before going into a
project for Hamilton.

I would love to import Hamilton's data into my app, Recollect.net.

Recollect is a superb service for citizens - we often get tremendously
positive feedback from citizens about how our app helps them out every
week.

Regarding data and formats, there are two datasets that are needed.
The first is geo-data - the polygons that define the garbage
collection zones. Ideally this data could be provided in KML, GeoJSON
or SHP. The second dataset is the schedule of pickups for each
collection zone. Ideally this would be in CSV file.

With those 2 datasets, we could pair with a local Hamilton hacker to
massage the data into our open TRON standard. We have a freemium
model and so would love to provide our service for residents of
Hamilton.

We already provide service to over 20 Canadian cities, and are looking
to add more all the time!

Our app works on all mobile platforms as well as the web, and lets any
citizen easily find their schedule, get weekly garbage reminders
(email, twitter, text message or voice call), and also import the
schedule into their calendar app. More details about our service are
available here: https://recollect.net/organizations

Please don't hesitate to get in touch if there is anything I can help
with.

Funny, I was thinking of making a waste application this weekend. In
fact, I got started on one, until I got distracted by something shiny.

Mine was more centred around "what goes where." While the city has a
fairly extensive list (here: http://www.hamilton.ca/CityServices/Garbage-and-Recycling/What-goes-where/),
it certainly doesn't have everything, and it's not a very user-
friendly layout, in my opinion.

I didn't see anything like that on Recollect. If it's open source,
I'd love to take a stab at implementing something like it.

Also check out "Waste Nothing" which does a great job of handling the
"what goes where" problem - http://wastenothing.ca/
