Auto-discovery, will it depend on hardware?

I've recently started to look into openHAB and version 2 has good timing for me since I will start small with testing so being there from the first alpha will be fun.

But I wonder if auto-discovery will be feature required by the actual hardware (UPnP, AllJoyn is mentioned in the blog), or will openHAB magically discover thingslike my LG TV and Aeon Labs Zwave etc? Or do we either need to wait for an firmware update from thevendor or simoly buy new stuff?

Hi Jon,

Auto-discovery will definitely always only be optional - if the hardware supports it, you can use it, if not, you have to manually configure the access to it.
In general, I see discovery being possible for all kinds of IP devices (either through UPnP, mDNS/Bonjour or AllJoyn) as well as for USB dongles like your ZWave stick.
The idea of openHAB was never that the hardware needs to support openHAB, but that openHAB supports the hardware - this will stay for openHAB 2 for sure!

Best regards,
Kai
