Has anyone experience to use tablets as wall mounted home automation screen? Screen should be, of course, always-on. Any idea, how long will tablet display withstand without failure, screen burn or fading 24/7?

Cheers,
Pali

Interesting questions!

If you are going to use an Android tablet I would suggest to use tasker to turn off the display if it is not needed.

You could program rules like:
- "turn off if nobody is at home".
- "Turn display off at night"
- "Turn on display for at least XX minutes when the proximity sensor detects something"
So you can activate the display just be putting your hand near the device.

Just some ideas.. :)

I'm going to use some iPads all around the house as in-wall solution. Not yet any experience with 24/7 but I don't think that this will be a problem.

I have a cheap Chinese android tablet on a wall mount made from acrylic glass. I have put two flat terminals on the back of the table to enable charging while on the mount.

I was also worried about screen burn, so I use Tasker to automatically start openHAB when putting the tablet on the mount and one of the "dock clocks" for the screen saver. Tasker also disables the turning off of the display while charging.

I was planned to use iPads, but because screen cannot be turned always on without jailbreaking (and jailbreaking start to be harder and harder), I probably will try an android tablet. Tasker looks promising.  I recognise that latest HABSweetie has a tasker support? So can screen then be controlled from the OH via HABSweetie? Can tablet screen be set on when home is an normal mode and off when home is on away or night mode?

What do you mean exactly by "cannot be turned always on without jailbreaking"?
If you disable the "automatic lock" the screen will stay always on.

Feel a little bit stupid :) I have always just tried to find option from the brightness adjustement page.

Thanks,
Pali

HP Slate 21, android based 21,5" full hd touch screen at inexpensive price.

http://www.tomsguide.com/print/hp-slate-21-review,reviews-1921.html

It's little bit fat, but otherwise it could be a really good candidate.

Have anyone any experience?

Screen burning is only a problem with CRT displays, not with LCDs!

In fact, that's not true. LCD displays can have the same effect as CRT. It's not based on same phenomenon, but from user perspective it's a same effect. In CRT displays, burn-in is permanent and in LCD it's temporary (called "image persistence"), which can be usually fixed.

I've been wondering about this - been thinking about going down the e-ink route - as they are very low power, don't suffer screen 'burn' and are designed for static images. It seems devices like the nook glow light touch might be worth looking at as they can be rooted to run Android and are touch screen.

I might be investigating this over christmas... we shall see!

Hi Paul,
I had pretty much the same idea some time ago. I wanted e-readers as wall mounted interfaces, because they are cheap, always ON and have very sharp image quality. Latest Nook devices seem good on paper - they have Android and web browser, they are touch and have relatively good hardware for a reader. But, the e-ink display seems just not to be ready for this. Although there are some hacks for fast display refresh (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kBbl6egyPsQ), this stays an e-ink display. The browser UX is far from decent and probably that's why Nook decided to remove the browser few weeks after the release. But I've never tested myself e.g. GreenT with a Nook rooted device and Chrome. So, if you decide going to that route, please share your tests. It's very interesting subject, I think :)

Here's my current setup. An old Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 running Android Jelly Bean. It's a bit too small I believe. But it will do for now.

It would be nice if I can send sounds to the tablets for announcing events and opening screens.

-For example if the door down opens I can chime the tablet upstairs or
-If I have alarm (intruder detection) it can open the habdroid page where I have sliders for entering the right combination to deactivete the alarm
-Or show a page with a camera when garage door opens

This could be doable with NotifyMyAndroid and Tasker. Imho you can add some URL to NMA messages and then let Tasker react to them.
