Hello,
Is anyone out there using a Honeywell wifi thermostat?  It's only $99, less than half the price of Nest.  There is an Android app for it, so it looks like there might be a way to make a binding for it - I'm not a developer, so I don't really know.

Besides the price, it also has the advantage of being less googlely - less likely for user habits to be monitored and whatnot.  If you're using this with OpenHAB, it might be nice to have OpenHAB doing most of the controlling rather than the thermostat.  This is especially true if you have other temperature sensors around the house feeding into the control algorithm.

And this is the WIFI model, so you don't need a Z-wave gateway for this thermostat to be useful.  Personally, I don't see the point of a non-battery powered device on Z-wave.  Just adds extra complication.  When you sell the house, the next owner won't be able to use it unless they have a Z-wave gateway, which is unlikely.  Wifi on the other hand everyone has.

I have the same wifi thermostat that came installed when we got a new
HVAC unit. I would have preferred the z-wave one :-)

I have done some cursory research into the unit and it does all SSL
connectivity to the cloud. I have seen some interface implementations in
selenium and python. I had this bookmarked, but have not tried the
script. Its on the TODO list...

I would expect that we could modify it to interface with OpenHAB.

So, no local-only control?  You can't just send it some command via wifi if you have internet access cut off?

I was hoping for better control.  If anyone has a recommendation for a cheaper thermostat that's a bit more open, love to hear about it.

If I remember correctly, it has a DHCP server enabled at first to help
with the wireless setting configuration. Once its set up, it disables
the daemon. Right now there are no other running services.

Here is my nmap of the device...

Looks like Honeywell has a api registration form, maybe a binding is possible:

Same here.  I'm waiting for a thermostat that I can do local control on.  Not spending that kind of cash on a cloud-only device.
