been a while since i've been in the insteon plm... i feel a bit rusty. I'd like to add support to communicate with my EZIO8sa's. I have three of them, each with 8 outputs. The outputs communicate on the different scenes/groups from their independent Insteon 2413s.

Initially I thought I could copy the config and features of the six btn switch (2334-232), but that didn't bear quick fruit.

Any tips to point me in the right direction would be appreciated. Need to shake off this rust.

How was this whole setup supposed to work conceptually? You have a "master" PLM modem on your PC that will send group broadcasts to a 2413 which is serial connected to the EZIO8SA and want the master to send out a group broadcast such that the other 2413 reacts to it (and triggers the EZIO)? Wouldn't you first have to link the master modem as controller to the 2413 as responder? Can't do that from openhab, but you'd have to use e.g. HouseLinc, same way you did for your six button keypads, set up modem broadcast groups on the master etc. You'd need each modem group correspond to a different shade, such that e.g. the master sends out a broadcast on group 12 to trigger shade A, group 13 to trigger shade B. Not sure how to make the 2413 a responder to group 12, 13..., but there should be instructions how to make it close relay X when controller Y sends a message. That's no different than linking different insteon switches to different relays.

Once you have done that (maybe a way to test trigger from HouseLinc) bring openhab into the picture. Use a six button switch config to begin with (with the "group" syntax), post insteonplm binding debug log and your .items file.

nice little drawing to show my setup: https://docs.google.com/drawings/d/1ARIwD0tSf3jNeI8mrfqR9Him-yyEeX5LRlICsK0Bi9c/edit?usp=sharing

FWIW (not much) - I have 12 shades in total, 3 EZIO8's, and 3 serial PLM's to control them.

I had three approaches labeled (A) and (B) in the diagram. Each involve trying to get my "master modem" (the 2413u connected to OH) to talk to some component on the Insteon network to control the blinds.

Approach (A) was my preferred and is exactly as you describe it. Get the "master modem" to control and respond to each of the EZIO8 modems. Houselinc however does not recognize/support the EZIO8s. Short of another tool to help me do this, I'm stuck. I did reach out to insteon support to see if there was a way to use the "set" button, but did not get a helpful response.

Approach (B) was my backup. I have each blind connected to a 6btn controller in the house. My original plan was OH could signal the blinds through the scene buttons indirectly. Unfortunately, while OH can respond and control the scene buttons, it does not appear the message is relayed to the blinds.

This is a tough one. Can you use HouseLinc to put the master PLM into linking mode for a given broadcast group (e.g. group 12), and then use the set button on the 2413S to make it a responder to that group? Don't know if you can do that with HouseLinc, or how. The set button method on the 2413S should work though, since that's no different than if you link the 2413S to a standard wall switch.

Another idea: you could connect the 2413S to a PC via serial port (or USB-to-serial), and then fool around with it using HouseLinc to make it a responder to group messages from the master modem. Perfect way to waste a rainy sunday afternoon.

Based on my experience with all other Insteon devices, approach (B) won't work because a responder will react to the group message it gets (e.g. switch on/off load), but will not send out a group broadcast message to signal its state change. This is probably done to prevent the network being flooded with messages by multiple responders.

not seeing a way from houselinc to control which group is in set mode.. had that dream as well. I have looked a few other third party tools that can interact with the insteon database on the controller. Would be an useful open source project -- or even extension to OH someday.

Connecting to the serial port is probably my last hope -- problem is my OH and Houselinc sit inside a VM away from physical IO ports, so i'll have to find a suitable workaround for that... like you said, perfect for a rainy sunday afternoon.

My son Daniel and I actually started working on a tool like that, but it's still not there, and on halt now due to more urgent projects.
