eBus addon for Vaillant ecoCompact boilers?

Hi,

I want to observe the performance (and record error messages) of my ecoCompact boiler (Gas-Brennwert-System). The boiler is in the second story under the ceiling of the house, my home server, running Linux, is in the cellar. I have ethernet link between all the stories of the house.

As I understand, the boiler internally uses eBus. Is the eBus-to-ethernet adapter at http://www.eservice-online.de/eBus/eBUS-Koppler-Ethernet.html something I can use? As far as I understand the documentation, this device converts the eBus signalling, which seems to be a serial protocol, to ethernet. Which then on Linux can be used with nc or remserial ( http://lpccomp.bc.ca/remserial/ ) to a serial port again. There is also some documentation on the eBus at http://ebus.webhop.org/twiki/bin/view.pl/EBus/EBusKonverter

Is this approach feasible? I am skilled enough in Java and Linux to feel comfortable extending openhab itself if necessary, it is just the hardware connection to the boiler I am not sure about.

After learning on the KNX user forum ( http://knx-user-forum.de/openhab/33011-openhab-ebusd-plugin-finde-es-nicht-new-post.html ) that the adapter is being supported since a few days, I have ordered the ethernet interface. I'll post my progress in this thread.

I too have both a Vaillant boiler and Recovair and neither are connect to KNX, any help would be great especially as I am in the UK and KNX is not the normal solution here.

Seems there is one guy working on a good solution - he just need some support and testers!
