I'll look from a distance and try to not get in the way :)
I'm still here for .deb packaging or giving links to manuals, just ping me.
I can also provide an artistic software stack if you wish - it's unique to us (and will definitely make the distro stand out of the 100s of Ubuntu spins, IMHO). I got lots of experience from making elementary OS, so I can add some niceties like performance optimizations too.

Cheers

Still here.

But to get some progress wouldn’t we first need to make some decisions clear? As they never really where actually decided during meetings?
so:
Team name: OpenFur

OS name: ????

Base OS: Ubuntu

Desktop: GNOME3?

So, are we indeed going to use GNOME3, and if so what will the OS itself be called?

And I think we need it to be more clear who does what.

So:
Shnatsel – said he could do some optimization, which would be important, so it would be a good idea if he would make sure that happens.

I myself could do the website and anything server related.

And what others can/want to do I’m not actually sure of since we never made any form of list with who does what.

Link, maybe you join irc channel we have few people interested.

And I not agree to make distro that use GNOME3, because it sucks.

GNOME 3 != GNOME Shell. GNOME 3 is the core, and it's far better than GNOME 2 (e.g. look at gconf from 2 and GSettings from 3). Everything that uses some GNOME components - Ubuntu Oneiric with Unity, elementary Luna with Pantheon Shell - they all use GNOME 3. If we stick to GNOME 2 we'll have bloated, unmaintained, abandoned technology, and that's not a good idea.

I agree with shnatsel, GNOME3 is a good desktop.

However, if you used Unity, then yes, that sucks.

Little example:

Unity’s compatibility with older hardware is rather bad, I have a computer with a AMD Athlon XP 1500+ and 749MB RAM with a ATI Radeon 9600.

And Unity won’t run on it, GNOME3, does, and quite good even (could use a bit more RAM but…).

Besides that we work as a team, which does mean we need to make compromises sometimes.

I personally prefer using KDE, and would have preferred to use that, but, assuming the majority of the team doesn’t want to use KDE, I think GNOME3 would be the best option them.

Yet, I do then want the option to shutdown directly from the desktop, in Fedora (which I use on the Athlon XP machine) you need to logout and only then you can shutdown….

That is quite irritating.

Performance varies greatly on different hardware both on Unity and GNOME Shell. You can see quite accurate benchmarks at http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=linux_desktop_managers1&num=1

Radeon drivers have a known bug related to Unity which makes it lag horribly, you can work it around by unchecking "Sync to VBlank" in Compiz general options. More info at http://www.webupd8.org/2011/04/things-to-tweak-fix-after-installing.html

You have to press Ctrl key and hold it to make "Hibernate" become "Shutdown" in GNOME Shell.

I personally think kde or xfce would be much better choose than gnome3.

I personally think than Pantheon is much better choice than anything else, that's why I work for elementary project, but that seems to be off the topic.

I've talked to Ubuntu Studio guys about integrating our artistic apps, they said they are happy to do it and that they will try to push them into Debian. If they do it, it will make integrating them much easier for us.

Also, be warned that I'm going to be completely offline since the 23rd of July till the 23rd of August, so if you want to do something without a risk of my involvement, you have a month ;)

Cheers

I've made a benchmark of real-life compression utilities in Linux and got some pretty interesting results.

http://www.webupd8.org/2011/07/free-linux-compression-utilities.html

Elementary .deb packages are moving to XZ compression ASAP. I think it can be useful in here, too.
