I tend to prefer the following solution: support the original WebDAV
and an extension that uses HTTP GET or POST and sends the WebDAV
commands as query parameters. In this scenario, the worst that can
happen is that some users with extra paranoid firewalls will not be
able to create web folders. Other features will work. The Apache
mod_dav can be easily extended to read WebDAV commands from query
params.

I'd say WebDAV vs. any other custom protocol that may be also based on Atom.

I'm not trying to be too negative towards WebDAV. Perhaps we can discuss ways to identify the supported protocols via the discovery document. Does anyone know if there are any discovery mechanisms for WebDAV endpoints?
