Good Evening,

Along with my OpenEVSE v3 kit, I got an EV simulator.  I think I am close to understanding it, but some of the documentation seems to reference old designs and configurations.  I've attached a chart (modified from the EVSE testing documentation) of what I believe the DIP switch settings to be to get each test state.

Here's my understanding of which component corresponds to each DIP switch:

DIP 1 = 2.74 k ohm resistor

DIP 2 = 1.30 k ohm resistor

DIP 3 = 330 ohm resistor

DIP 4 = diode engage / disengage

These values result from DIP combinations:

DIP 1 + DIP 2 = 882 ohm

DIP 1 + DIP 2 + DIP 3 = 246 ohm

These DIP switch settings and combinations seem to give the values required to put the EVSE into the desired test states.

I'd appreciate it if anyone could confirm my understanding of the EV Sim DIP switch settings above.  Also, can anyone tell me when the DIP for the diode should be on and what I should expect it to do?  When I have the diode DIP on, the EV does not enter the correct state.

I attached a photo of my EV sim.  I'd appreciate it if you could take a look at it and tell me if I made any obvious mistakes in the build.  I am pretty sure I have the diode orientation correct, but I'd like to be sure.

You are correct. Connect the SIM....

Switch 1 is State B "Connected"
Switch 1 + 2 is State C "Charging"
Switch 1 + 2 + 3 is State D "Error Vent Required"
Switch 1 + 2  + 4 is Error Diode Check Failed.

Thanks for the clarification, Chris.  I think it was just when to engage the diode that was not clear to me.  I'll try it again once I have fixed my LCD issues.

Pat, the EV simulator simply helps to test all of the possible states that the EV can tell the EVSE over the pilot wire.  The EV has a diode.  The EVSE tests for the error condition when the diode is missing.  The EV simulator helps to test that very rare condition and it is useful for complete testing of the firmware for J1772 protocol compliance.

I better understand it now it now.  I believe that I saw the expected behavior with the simulator now that I understand the role of the diode DIP switch.  My setup appears to be functioning properly.  I updated my modified sim settings chart and attached it in case it helps anyone else with the simulator.  Thanks Craig and Chris!

Thanks Chris and Craig.  Thanks to you guys, I understand the simulator settings better now.  I believe the role of the diode DIP switch was the issue I had.  I updated my modified sim DIP switch settings chart and attached it in case it helps anyone else out down the road.

I appreciate your guidance Chris and Craig.  Thanks to you guys, I understand the simulator settings better now.  I believe my misunderstanding of the role of the diode DIP switch was the issue I had.

I got my LCD working, so I tried the EV sim board again.  It worked as expected and entered all modes properly.  Thanks again for the guidance on how to use it.
