Building the Open EVSE 30 amp deluxe kit. Using a 14-50 RV style plug for 220V use. I get how to wire for 220V what I'm unsure of is if I only have 120V and want to use the auto sense feature for L1 charging what legs get hooked up? Does the hot go to L1 fuse and the neutral go to L2  fuse? Sorry for the NEWB question. I plan on using this while traveling with the C MAx as a tow vehicle to RV parks and some RV parks do not have 220 power.

I have built many of these portable, dual voltage kits.

The internal wiring in the EVSE is the same but I suspect you are talking about the plug. There was a PDF I saw online that listed how to convert the 14-50 to any type of outlet but I cannot find it. I thought I had it saved.

For a normal plug I think its called a NEMA 5-15, one of the hot wires of the 14-50 goes to the hot of the 5-15 and the other hot of the 14-50 goes to neutral .

I have built several adapters, here is the info your looking for, pretty easy to do yourself:

5-15 plug (regular 15A plug) to 14-50 outlet

Lets you plug your 120/240v EVSE into a standard outlet. Features a molded on plug, 12ga. Heavy duty 20A cable and a quality Camco EZ-Grip outlet. I’ve sealed around the outlet to prevent water ingress even though it’s sold for outdoor use by Camco.

Tech pin out
------------------
Plug -  Outlet                         This is for
EVSE's NOT RV, and a RV adapter won't
L -------L1                               work because the pinout is different for a RV's
N ----- L2                               different purpose. They use L-to-L1&2, N-to-N, G-to-G
G------G

I would NOT connect the N(eutral) from the 120Volt plug to both L2 _and_ Neutral.
Do NOT connect the neutral at all at the 14-50 outlet.
In case of an (by accident)  wrong wired 120 volt outlet ("hot neutral") and someone using your converter by accident could provoke a short circuit.

Is the way to go in my opinion

I goes without saying but you always need to check your outlet first with a Outlet Tester, their cheap, I have 3 floating around.
I agree with what you say, post edited

I agree, the OpenEVSE is symmetrical and the neutral is never used.  All of the adapters I have constructed were strictly white it one line and black to the other. Green to the ground terminal. It should be marked for EVSE only.It amazes me how many outlets fail the 3 light tester.

A 14-50 is unique in even having a neutral terminal. A L6-20 or L6-30 only has 3 terminals.
