Who Fears Death was a science fiction novel written by Nigerian-born author Nnedi Okonafor, published by DAW, an African-led publishing company. It's about a young woman, Ishmael, who lives in the rural backwaters of Nigeria, where life is tough and life is short, and when a tragic incident thrusts her into a coma, she never dreams she would wake up in a bed in a rehabilitation center, but rather on a ship full of nurses and doctors and others trying to save her life. This is what happened to Ishmael, and how her life was spared when a cargo vessel ran aground and was lowered into the delta.

She survived the sinking, but at one point the doctors said that she might not ever regain the ability to walk. The story told by Okonafor takes us into the minds of those who can't walk, how their bodies are damaged so severely that it's like they're immobile, and how they have to depend on others to do things for them, things that could never be done by one person alone. It's a story that asks, 'What if?'
What if Ishmael had a pet snake? What if she had been able to talk? What if she had magic powers? What if she had a friend here? One thing we are sure of is that there is nothing by which we can compare Ishmael to other people, because she is unique, and has a set of unique circumstances, and the book just describes those circumstances as best it can.
