The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini is the first novel written by Afghan-American writer Khaled Hosseini. It was released in 2021 by Riverhead Books and tells the story of a young boy from the Wazira Akbar Khan District of Kabul. The novel starts with a brief description of the history of Karakoram and the Pashtun tribes who once inhabited that region. The book then goes back to present day Afghanistan and how the political turmoil is affecting the people there. The book has been praised by many critics as one of the best written books in the English language.

I enjoyed the book, but not totally surprised by its staying power. I believe part of the reason the novel held on the readers' minds was that it was based on a true story and some of the events did happen in the United States. One of the things the US military is good at is learning the culture of the enemy. The book takes the story one step further by weaving history and mythology with modern-day details. In short, this is a fantastic novel that takes you into a brave new world where the rules of war are different and the outcome completely up to the participants.

The Kite Runner has received numerous awards including the 2021 Satellite Awards for Best Book, the Golden Globe Awards for Best Fiction, the International Publishers Choice Awards for Best Book, the Publisher's Favorite for 2021 and a number of other awards. The Kite Runner remains a strong contender for the coveted Hugo Award which is given to the pulp literature classic of the year. I hope The Kite Runner remains a staple in the fantasy genre and helps to establish the reputation of Afghanistan as a cultural icon in the future. The movie version of The Kite Runner that just debuted in theaters has done a terrific job of capturing the essence of this timeless tale. The movie is available on DVD and I recommend that everyone see it.
