The Shack by William P. Young is the eleventh novel that series chronicles the exploits of Frank "The Shack" Miller, escaped convicts who works at a lumber mill in nineteenth-century Michigan. Frank is the father of four children, Don, Tommy, Viva and Anna. He also has a Yorkshire terrier named Spot. The story is set in the backwoods of upstate New York and involves a variety of different characters, including an escaped slave, a white girl who becomes Frank's adopted daughter, a sheriff's wife who becomes his lover and later, a white woman who becomes his wife.

The novel has been compared to the better-known True Grit and even has some elements of that novel. It is also well-written and has a simple plot that does not overstay its welcome. I don't know why it has never been made into a movie or made available on home video. The novel has only positive reviews, but if you are a fan of the film, then The Shack by William P. Young is the one for you.

As I said, The Shack by William P. Young is easily one of the best books about the life of outlaws ever written. The writer manages to capture the gruff, tough and yet affectionate persona of a criminal in a way that almost makes you feel for him (and vice versa). The book's protagonist, Frank, is the father of four children who were left by their mother in order to escape from an abusive marriage. Once they escaped, however, their mother died and they were forced to live in the woods. They survived for nearly two years before they were captured and Frank soon learned that his father was being paid to protect the plantations by a crooked lawman, Quincey Morris.
