The Emotionally Intelligent Manager by Caruso addresses the issue of how managers can maintain control of their emotions when working in teams. We've long been told that emotions need to be carefully expressed and handled in carefully planned ways, and only at specific times and in specific environments. However, this is especially true in the workplace, where managing others is often the most stressful job imaginable. Managers must keep emotions in check in order to get the job done, no matter how much they might actually be enjoying it. This book takes a great deal of its subject matter into consideration, which makes it very interesting to read.

The Emotionally Intelligent Manager covers a variety of topics, from how to handle conflicts, to the proper way to approach a difficult boss, to how to deal with office politics. It even has a chapter that looks at why some people are better at some tasks than others, as well as tips for keeping your emotions under control while you're on the clock. The Emotionally Intelligent Manager is probably best suited for a general reading level, as it doesn't offer a lot of depth on any one topic, but instead jumps right to the next topic without a whole lot of information on the individual elements. However, if you take all of the suggestions and apply them to your own personality, you'll be able to tailor the book to fit your needs.

The Emotionally Intelligent Manager also offers a good dosage of practical advice as well. For instance, there's a section that gives tips on whether or not to bring a team member into a meeting before asking them to do so, as well as a list of five "do not do" activities. While these are certainly not earth shattering suggestions, they will help a manager to keep his team members in line. In addition, the book includes stories from some of today's most successful people, like Tiger Woods and Donald Trump, who have shown that the right attitude is key to success in the work place. If you need a simple guide to getting the best out of your team, this is a great choice.
