A Touch of Blossom by Syme is an informative, slightly humorous, and at times a little disturbing look at how our culture tends to skew. Set in a small town in the northeast of the United Kingdom, the main character, Alex, is a young woman who has apparently been cast out into the real world after her parents divorced. This means that she's got to learn on her own how to live, work, and survive as a working adult. While the social environment of her town seems safe and accepting, Alex soon discovers that this isn't quite so simple. The author clearly has a liking for creating strong female characters, and this novel shines through in the character's voice and actions. Alex isn't a victim, she's an independent woman who's been given a lot of struggle in order to find both personal happiness and independence.

The author captures the beauty of rural life through the natural color and scenery of this period in British history, and it's obvious from the cover image that she chose this particular setting to create the book. The scenes depicted in A Touch of Blossom by Syme are some of the most beautiful nature scenes you'll ever see. Alex and her friends spend much of their time traveling through the picturesque and idyllic countryside. The colors are rich and vibrant, the buildings stand tall and proud, and the scenery is absolutely awe inspiring.
In terms of plot, A Touch of Blossom by Syme follows the usual conventions of a children's book: Alex is in search of a bear to take care of, along with her friends Flora and Frankie. The three of them soon discover that they have much in common, which leads to some wonderful interactions. There's also a strong, positive message about friendship and love that lingers throughout the text. If you enjoy children's books in general, you'll really enjoy A Touch of Blossom by Syme.
