One of the main themes throughout Zywiecza is the fact that life in such a camp could be so horrible, while everyone seems so happy and carefree. Yet beneath the surface, people are still searching for meaning, purpose, and direction. One can hardly help but question what exactly is happening in their lives, while others try desperately to cling to any hope of a brighter future. Despite the terrible conditions that they are forced to endure, they manage to maintain a positive attitude, even amidst the bleakest days. With the constant presence of death around them, however, it becomes increasingly difficult to maintain this kind of optimism.

The main characters in the story, including Klara and her parents, have their own motives for wanting to escape. However, they soon find that their situation becomes more complicated when they come face-to-face with some of the other camp inmates, such as Maxim, an escapee who wants to return to Hungary and join his family. Within a few short minutes, readers are introduced to these intriguing characters and are immediately taken in by their unique personalities. As the plot unravels from the horrors that are being perpetrated, the reader soon comes to expect and respect the human element of these experiences, which makes this story much more engaging than other similar stories.
