"How to Ruin Everything: The Adventures of an Ordinary Man" by W. Alexander Smith is a collection of short essays about life. At first I found the book to be too dry, a bit too academic for my taste, but after reading through most of the work I realized it was more than I'd originally thought. Smith is very humorous throughout, and although some of his observations are somewhat facetious, other times he brings light-hearted observation into a more serious tone. These observations often show up in his writing and in particular in these essays where he addresses various day-to-day problems of life. While some of the material in this collection may seem a bit specific, there is still a lot to be learned from the man's writing.

One of the most interesting things that Smith writes about is his belief that all happiness is personal. He argues that we can measure happiness from other people's reactions to us - such as the way they react to certain situations or to others, and not from our own responses. This makes much more sense when you consider the concept of personal projection, which is at the heart of psychotherapy. Personal projection occurs when we allow someone else's feelings and reactions to influence our own thinking and feelings, and this can cause us to create all kinds of problems in our lives when our judgment is influenced by what we think is true.

The essays in this collection, including "How to Ruin Everything: A Secular Pilgrimage" and "The Best Things in Life Are Never Paid for," prove that life can be enjoyed without effort, and that the most enjoyable times are those we choose to be. Watsky warns against escapist tendencies and the need to escape reality. Instead, he recommends that we should embrace it, take it on face value, and let it teach us how to see through its seeming chaos to find a wisdom that is larger and deeper than our understood understandings. This is a wonderful book for any Christian who is looking for something to help them understand their faith in a new way.
