Hello,

we at Open Knowledge Austria are looking for some good examples for Open and real-time Data of elections.
which countries do offer an API during the election day and after, to retrieve real-time results from election districts? also data standards for this would be interesting. any help (answers, links, contacts) would be helpful.

cheers, stefan

Hi Stefan,

We are aware of the following open APIs provided by governments (some links may no longer work well)
There are also many media organizations that provide a real-time API.  Every media organization and government we've worked with has had a different API.  Australia is the only country that provided results using a standard (EML).  Even in that case, the AEC required custom extensions to the EML 5.0 standard to meet the election night use case.

In the US, The National Institute of Standards and Technoglogy (NIST) collaborated with many other organizations on a working group for election standards.  They recently published specification 1500-100 for election night results reporting.  We believe that the NIST standard can be extended to support non-US use.  We find it a better fit for this use case than EML.

I'd strongly advocate for you to evaluate the NIST standard and provide feedback on its applicability for Austria.   Please reach out to me privately if you wish to discuss the standard's use.

Regards,
Chetan
