Hello Everyone,
Hope this email finds you all great.

This is Haitham, Assistant Professor, Faculty of Computers, Mansoura University.
I am teaching (Open Source Course) this year for 3rd year students, in Software Engineering course.
I am wondering if you can / willing to help in this course.
I find it a good opportunity for students, and the community. I have 30 enrolled students in the course.

Forms of help I hope I can get:
- Suggestions of Open Source projects that students can really participate at, knowing that most of them are not efficient software developers. I am thinking about testing, like testing Firefox and using their bug report system to report issues, or may be participate in firefox test jam.
- Suggestions to topics be discussed in lectures.
- We can arrange a visit (if you are willing) to the Faculty to talk to students about Open Source in software development. We are interested in software companies based on open source technologies, to deliver to students that open source is a real hype, not myth.
- Other online activities that students can do to enrich the community.

I believe I have the power of 30 students who are willing to learn, help, and be active in open source community. Hope you will help me make use of this power in the community.
Any ideas / suggestions are welcome.

Regards,
~Haitham

The company where I work (Opensource framework: Vaadin) does encourage students to work in their community. Not only by providing free mentorship, but by giving a bounty ranging from 50euros to 150euros for fixing bugs: https://vaadin.com/bounty

I gave a session about this before @Mushtarak, but unfortunately no one participated in the bounty program from Egypt so far.

Hello Haitham
It's wonderful to see such initiative from a university assistant professor
It's opensource contribution guide made by GitHub (our beloved GitHub )
Though , I'd recommend a way different topic to talk about it at least once , let's call 'spirit of opensource ' to tell students about :
1- opensource is about doing more than talking , the idea itself came from single person decided to take action Richard stallman , he acted when he saw there is a need to act
2- the idea of sharing , opensource is about sharing , knowledge , code , things
3- Being open to people and ideas , open source acticies are self filtering , if someone proposed something and no body liked it it will fade away , even for people , those who do not fit in any activity will eventually fade away
4- most of students are busy thinking about jobs , future and so on , try to tell them that highest paid jobs are opensource technologies developers , also people get hired from GitHub based on their work
5- even little things (contributing to code, documentations , telling people about it ) will matter to millions of other people , even single line
6- do not get intro some distribution wars , fedora vs Ubuntu , vim vs emacs , it doesn't really matter at all

At last I think you should consider to try the idea yourself to have the experience , it will add alot to you

Thanks
Ahmed M. Araby

Hi Haitham
I'm glade to know that Mansoura university finally teaching open source technology.
I believe there is a powerful open source community in mansoura, you can ask about CAT group. I gave a number of sessions in open source and soft skills in ITI Mansoura, and mansoura university in CAT reloaded events. Therefore, I'll be happy to arrange another open source session in mansoura.
Best regards
Haitham Nabil

Dear Mr. Haitham,

It's really good to see how Open Source is gradually used to inspire young Egyptian generation to contribute to the advancement of humanity.

If I may suggest the following topic that can be helpful to build strong Open Source course:
  • Open Source and Free licenses and the difference between them (as an example https://choosealicense.com/). Because what the license is what really makes a peace of software "Open Source" or "Free" or "Proprietary". I know is topic is overlooked in our Egyptian culture but it is the core of what free software movement is built upon. This topic can include copy left movement and can also cover content license like different variations of "Creative Commons" (as an example https://creativecommons.org/choose/)
  •  Basic introduction Git as configuration management tool. What is meant by "clone", "fork", merge and pull requests. I know that GitHub is recommended as the standard repository service, but I would recommend to use "GitLab" because it offers true model of how open source software can be used to build a profitable business, and it has clear and open source development process (also it offers free private repos at Gitlab.com).
  • Markdown as documentation format standard. It's widely accepted format for both GitHub and GitLab, that can be used to render README files, Wiki entries, git commit messages and issues description. Also several chatting application have Markdown support like Mattermost (Open Source Slack-like chatting server that comes bundles with GitLab community edition).

The previous topics allow your student to do the following:

Create new open source git repo online, add the README.md file and choose a license for their repo. Which are the same 3 steps used to start any great Open Source project.

Bounty haunting programs, issue reporting and documentation contributions are all great topics to supplement the technical topics stated above, by working on the second most important skill any Open Source contributor needs: Communication and Collaboration.

Thanks,
Rafik
